hi all!

I'm moving to the US tomorrow, on a green card, and requested by social security number and card during my consular processing.

I have read that it can take 3 weeks for the card to arrive but have a job starting on 30 July. Is there any way I can get just the *number* in advance of the card so I can give it to my employers?

I never heard of that being possible so I'd say no.

I started work before my SSN number arrived. My pay was on hold until they got the number but I was able to go to work each day.

You say you already have a green card? So you should already have your SSN? Or do you mean you are moving on an immigrant visa and you become a permanent resident on arrival? Terminology matters.

Timeline in brief:

Married: September 27, 2014

I-130 filed: February 5, 2016

NOA1: February 8, 2016 Nebraska

NOA2: July 21, 2016

Interview: December 6, 2016 London

POE: December 19, 2016 Las Vegas

N-400 filed: September 30, 2019

Interview: March 22, 2021 Seattle

Oath: March 22, 2021 COVID-style same-day oath

Now a US citizen!

You can start working without the SSN by showing you've applied for a number. Note that this might delay your first pay.

Indeed! I have them this and pointed tk the relevant DOS into but they say that as a policy they want all employees to have an SSN from day one. Will try to get them to adapt. 😀

Yes sorry, the latter. I'm coming in as a permanent resident with my green card and SSN to be mailed to me. So I have my residence status in my passport but  no actual card (green or SSN) yet.

Recently, there are many cases lost their green card via mailbox. I recommend you guys should do these steps after arriving the US:

- Notify the post office about your name and address.

- Sign up the Informed delivery service of USPS via this website: https://informeddelivery.usps.com/box/pages/intro/start.action

Everyday, USPS will send a text message or email attached with the photo of envelopes to notify that they will send mails within that day.

Then you can wait and check the mailbox to get the green card, before package thief stole it.

- After paying the green card fee $220, you can use the number to check when USCIS issued your green card via their website:

so, as to 'getting the number' prior ?

yes you can !

How ? walk into a SSA office and have them look you up.  If the card was already ordered from the DS-260 stuff, the number is in the system and the clerk will print out a page with the number on it (not the card).

Also, if you're not in the system, well, you can apply today, then go back tomorrow and get the number.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

They no longer print out sheets with the number on it

It depends on the person, I actually went into an office and they did tell me mine before it arrived.

Interesting. The officer was pretty adamant that he could not, even though he could tell me it had been created. I'm still within the first two weeks so it's not a great hardship and the fact it's coming is just fine with me.

Amusingly he then asked me (as I'm British) who my favorite F1 driver is. We both think Lewis Hamilton is the man! That amused me greatly after an hour's wait.

Yeap, they aren't obligated to, but they can at their discretion. Just make sure to register for USPS Informed Delivery so you know it's coming.
