To whom it may help,

I used to be out of work for one year.

Since my Visa status is "Green Card", therefore, one of my colleagues suggest me to apply EDD(Unemployment benefits) CA Medicare benefit, Cal Fresh plus some low-income benefit for my energy bill. I actually got approved from Unemployment benefits for 6 month and Medicare for 6 month plus 600 annual saving for my energy bill while I was out of work.

I have keep searching new job opportunities and having some ongoing interview while I was received those government benefits.

Company HQ told me both green card holder and U.S citizen can eligible to applied EDD (Unemployment benefits), Medicare, Cal Fresh, and any low income benefit.

Even though, I had got approved for my medicare, but I have NEVER use it during the time I got approved.

The reason why I had applied it because president Obama said everyone have to have insurance in order to prevent any penalty issue while filing their tax return.

Recently, I have see several news article says people who had applied or received any Public Benefits will got denied for their U.S Citizenship application ?

Due to whatever done is done, but these article makes me really worry about what I have done during the time I was out of work.

I am really worry about this. Did anyone can answer my concern ?

Any feedback will greatly appreciated !!!

Thanks,

Train.

You are mistaken.

You can have food stamp, unemployment, Obama care, Temp assistance program, and also you also may file N400 Fee wavier (Filing N400 for free).

It does not impact your N400 application, but might speed up the process.

Receiving public benefits is not an issue unless you were not entitled to them.

Unemployment is not a public benefit, at least in the context that could be relevant. You pay into unemployment insurance as you work. You receive unemployment compensation as a result, assuming you meet the requirements. Non-permanent residents qualify for UC as well.

I'm unsure of the requirements for CA Medicare. If you were entitled to receive it and did, then there's no issue.

I'm also unsure on how UC impacts you while abroad. Presumably, you must be seeking employment to qualify for UC for those weeks, which likely would not qualify if you were taking a vacation abroad. The proper process would be to not certify those weeks for which you were not seeking or available for work, and therefore not receive benefits during that period.

If you were not eligible and received unemployment compensation, then this is an over-payment and should be settled or else the IO may determine a lack of Good Moral Character. Although UC is a state program assisted with federal funds, so I'm not 100% on how that plays into the process.

1) Trump cannot make laws. He can issue directives and Executive Orders to enforce laws and set priorities. Only Congress can make laws.

2) The news article referenced contains a lot of misleading information. The changes, which are not in place yet AFAIK, only affect those who must show that they are not a public charge. There is no public charge concern associated with citizenship. The issue, again, as noted in the nolo.com article would be fraudulently obtaining benefits.

3) The requirement to repay any incorrectly or fraudulently obtained public benefits has always (or at least as far back as I can remember) existed. The I-864 sponsor(s) for the immigrant are liable to repay these if the immigrant does not do so themself (although this is rarely enforced).

Pretty sure it won't affect your chances, just if you were to get divorced..then it would come back on the sponsors responsibility to support you. Other then that...you are fine.  Your timeline is empty and little to no background information. Stop reading all the fake news and relax...you should be fin..now go and try to find a job ok?

How were you able to afford to fly to your cousins wedding (in the UK mind you!) while your jobless and receiving unemployment benefits? When your out of country you aren't available for work in their eyes....But honestly I doubt this will be a concern either.
