There are no rules dictating whether companies decide to pull their sponsorship.

Other companies are allowed to follow in they feel their sponsorship of her show tarnishes their image (or if we get to the core issue - If they fear they will lose money). Her employer can then decide how to proceed (again, it will come down to what makes them more money).

You are absolutely correct, the decision will ultimately be up to the company.  Just like in the NFL, the whole free speech issue/concern is simply a red herring.

What's funny is I went to boot camp with the son of the guy that owns Autotrader. The guy I served with was pretty decent but his dad was a ### hole and acted stuck up when I met him.

I completed agree there is a "bias"  in television right now towards the left, but ultimately it must come down to money (like everything).

The networks and sponsors must believe right now that the "liberal" viewers are more likely to impact their bottom line. I don't know if they have evidence for that, or if it's based on demographics or something. Do more "left-leaning" people watch television? I have no idea. I don't own cable.

a much greater percentage of the MDL has much more time to sit home and watch the TV

You know what I'm going to ask...

Do you have the demographic data to support your claim? Someone may have studied TV viewers and political leanings before (very likely) and I'm sure that comes into play when every network considers their response in situations like this.

Samantha Bee was hired for her show intentionally because she has left leaning opinions. That is her target audience. While she may have gone too far in this particular insult, the demographic of viewers for her show may be more in line and that may protect her.

I used to watch the Daily Show when Jon was in charge and Samantha would be a guest and fit in very well with that demographic.

Things changed with Jon's departure and would not be surprised if I am not alone in moving on. I would imagine the ratings are not pretty.

The NFL finally realized they are a for profit business and decided to do what's best for their bottom line by prohibiting their employees from engaging in offensive acts in public while they are on the job and representing the NFL. Has nothing to do with free speech.

The transition from Jon to literally anyone else was going to be accompanied by a ratings dip. I'm sure they had an expectation of that. I'm not sure if what's his name (blanking currently) has met their "expectations", and even if he hasn't it could be due to combination of factors and not just due to the fact that he is more overtly left-leaning compared to Jon. I know I certainly don't watch the show as much as I did when Jon was on (though in part because I don't have cable anymore). When I have watched him though (still blanking...), he's not bad. I like having some people in positions like that who grew up in other countries. It creates both opportunities for jokes, but also opportunities for interesting comparisons. Oliver on HBO is obviously very far left, but I still find him quite funny (though my wife is getting more and more irritated with his obvious disdain for the Monarchy).

Kneeling is now considered an offensive act...:jest:

I'd love to see all sports stadiums require all employees to stop what they are doing to observe the Anthem. Is it not offensive for the hot dog stand to keep operating? I believe some sports do this (and perhaps some stadiums). NFL should at the very least make it mandatory. It's offensive (honestly i'd say far more offensive than taking a knee).

The fact you are blanking says it all.

Oliver is usually OK he does have his crazy train moments but with Samantha it is the other way around.

Jon with the benefit of hindsight limited these and kept it funny and relevant, hard act to follow.
