14 hour layover in Narita Airport from MNL to DFW

Any past experiences or tips is appreciated. Me and my fiance will be heading back home to Dallas Tx where she will be having her POE. We have a 14 hour layover in which we will be staying in airport until our next connecting flight since my fiance only has a k1 visa. Any one know if we will have to claim baggage and recheck it in again before our next flight? All flights are under Japan airlines so wasnt sure if are checked in luggage will be already checked in. Also what should we expect and need for the POE in DFW? Thank you for your time

You always have to recheck bags after clearing customs in the US. You can count on that.  For such a long layover I always go to a nearby hotel.  Some have day rates, or else a barter site can get you something reasonable at a nicer place.  We got the Hilton for $70.  So much nicer than the airport!

For POE you only need the passport and famous "do not open" envelope.   the whole process is fast for most people, and they will probably just ask when She plans to be married. You will probably go to secondary and she will spend it waiting while they input the data in the computer. When my husband cleared Poe, he was out within an hour of Landing.

Call JAL directly, most their transit flights does not require to recheck baggage as they will process it. However because the layover is long clearing this up with them is better.

If the terminal changes, highly likely you will need to check out and recheck. Although JAL usually uses the same terminal, if the flight is codeshare (most are) they may change.

What are you talking about?  This doesn't relate to this thread

If you are flying JAL all the way from Manila to DFW then they will check it to DFW

If you are flying different carries then you may have to get it Japan,  Japan Airlines used American Airlines as a travel partner from DFW to Manila, if you use them then they will ship your luggage from MNL to DFW.

We fly through Narita every trip.  You will not need to claim your bags in Narita.   Find a comfortable place to nap...  that is a long layover.

At POE I stayed with my wife, we both cleared through together.  If not sure which booth is for immigrates there is usually an agent standing just inside that area that you can ask.

It is Japan ..   the K1 from the Philippines can not exit the terminal area without a special visa.

Here is some older information but I advise that you check with JAL on what your options are.

JAL operates their own hotel close to the airport, called Nikko. The room is free with the layover and the hotel shuttle is free from the airport. The airline automatically reserves the room for you.

Immigration Counter A at Narita Airport gives the overnight "shore pass". It takes about 5-10 minutes with your passport and boarding pass. Also there are two forms the airline hands out that need to be completed by everyone going out of the airport. One is for immigration and one is for customs … the process is easy since JAL does this all the time.

At POE:  Like Hank, we stayed together as well.  I'd simply ask a agent where to go.  We got lucky as the agent took us directly to a booth bypassing everyone.

The process is fairly simple.  Read the POE experiences of people traveling through Dallas:   http://www.visajourney.com/reviews/poereviews.php?poe=Dallas&dfilter=0

Finally done.

You don't have to recheck your luggage in. I had a 12 hour layover in Narita.....it wasn't fun and I slept on a bench (luckily it was just me)....walked around...it was in the middle of the night and everything was closed and it was too risky to try and make the last train out. So if you can plan ahead you can stay in one of the sleep areas but it appeared to be kind of expensive (100 for like 4 hours!).

sounds like Hank has it covered if that works for you, well advised to find a hotel, as there really aren't many options in the airport.

JAL Lounge is pretty nice, see if you can buy a day pass into it, or if you are One World Gold or above you would have free access for you and a guest.

Get a lounge pass at the hotel so you can take a nap. You won't need to re-check your bag in Japan. You will re-check once you land at your US entry point, on your way to your connecting domestic flight.

It will help to call ahead/contact their helpdesk regarding travelling in Japan while on your layover. Philippine passport holders need a Visa to enter Japan, and those take time to process. I was stayed overnight in Japan once (due to an engine malfunction in the plane). "Blue passport" holders got quick processing and VIP treatment to the overnight accommodations. It took the airline hours to process the  'one day visa' for passengers who belonged to countries which require visas. Unfortunately, the Philippines is one such country. Best of luck.
