More fake news and it didn't come from CNN.  I thought the folks at NPR were much smarter, it is either they are idiots, or they are pushing a biased political agenda.  I don't believe it is hypocritical to follow the laws and the rules laid down by the Secret Service.

Is it actually fake news? I'd file this under the "misleading titles" section that we talked about in another thread.

The actual information presented is true. Guns aren't allowed during the speech. They just happened to omit WHO decided that.

I agree with following the Secret Service recommendations, but I also admit I had a little laugh when I first read the article. It is at least slightly ironic that a group advocating for arming more people to improve safety (including Trump himself) happily go along with a decision to disarm people to improve safety in this instance.

If a police department decided to disarm people for a public event, in order to increase safety, would the NRA approve?

What a crock. Even says in the article, no guns around, when in truth the SS is packing a lot of firepower, including a mini gun.

I've seen some really stupid FB posts about this.......something like "guns are safe enough for our schools, but not an NRA convention".............are these people's common sense so lacking that they really see no difference in the two situations?

I'm not a member of the NRA (obviously) so I can't admit to being an expert on their beliefs. Correct me if I'm wrong here.

Isn't one of their basic tenets "The best way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun"?

I was under the understanding that one of the reasons they believe in having more members of the public armed is they believe the more guns that are out there in the hands of "good guys", the safer we all are.

The Secret Service may bring lots of guns to that convention, but based on that rationale wouldn't it still be safer to allow the public to bring in their guns? Surely that would mean even more good guys with guns, right?

Posted

the only 'safe' and reasonable solution is to make sure that all in attendance are armed, including mike pence and the secret service. anyone who isn't armed that gets shot is asking for it.

I think you forgot to mention that it is a group (the NRA) that supports the 2nd amendment within the laws on the books.  The NRA has complied with the laws of the venues holding their conventions in the past, this isn’t the first time guns were not allowed at their convention depending on the rules of the venue.

Lastly, the headline writers are also part of the biased media.

Does the NRA not believe that the more "good people" armed with guns the better? It still is a little contradictory to their stance in other situations. If they truly wanted to protect Pence, and they believed in what they preach, they would advocate for arming all of the guests. That way there are even more guns available to stop a bad hombre.

Biased media yes...but not quite "Fake News".

i don't see where it's biased at all. npr reported the nra's response, they reported the tweet from dana loesch, the gave criticisms from nra members. and criticisms from parkland shooting survivors.

You can argue that the title is misleading, or at least trying to steer you into one line of thought (That the NRA chose to ban guns from the conference).

It would read quite differently if it was something like "Secret Service bans firearms during Presentation by VP Pence at NRA Meeting"

For me - It isn't a huge deal. As you point out, they cover most of the bases within the article itself. Some people see it as a little ironic/contradictory to the NRA's established opinions, others see it as quite a reasonable thing. I sit somewhere in the middle.

imo, the only way the title is misleading is if guns are actually allowed by attendees during the nra conventions. to say this is fake news, well, i'd need to see something fake. and there's nothing fake in the article or the title.

anyway, the premise that titles are supposed to be anything other than eye catching summaries of the content to follow is weird to me. titles are meant to as replacements to full content or to steer thought outside of 'i'd like to read more'.

Are you surprised that NRA people are law-abiding people? It goes to show you that the NRA is not the problem when it comes to mass shootings.

Are you advocating that the NRA should break the law?  It is not contradictory to advocate against gun laws that violate or limit the 2nd Amendment and still follow the duly passed laws on the books.  Would a doctor be a hypocrite to advocate for medical marijuana, yet not prescribe it to a patient if it was not legal in the state they were located?
