Try using www.skyscanner.net (it's a UK site so change the settings to United States - Dollars) to look for deals on airline tickets. In 2016 I was able to get round trip tickets in June for $800. In November 2017 and January 2018 (typically low season) I got tickets for $590 and $570.

I find www.momondo.com is often cheaper than skyscanner. Try that.

I just did a comparison between Momondo, Expedia and Skyscanner.  Chicago to Manila RT June 8 to June 17.

Momondo $1,176

Skyscanner $1,166

Expedia $1,087

These seem to bounce around a lot  I found Skyscanner to be cheaper for my flight next week

Momondo $985

Skyscanner $964

Expedia $1,046

Considering that is usually pay between $600 and $700 this was a bit of a shock.

Close in booking coupled with the start of the US summer school holiday season always jacks airfares up

I did notice that they do come back down in September.  I am hoping for a week there every couple months until the CR-1 is done.

I consider myself to be a very logical person......but i just can not find any logic in the way airline prices are set.....it boggles my mind.

The clearing the browser thing is an urban myth. Airlines may raise prices if there's a number of frequent hits for a certain trip, but this happens regardless of your browser/cache/whatever.

It's called yield management.  They don't care so much about load factor but to maximize the yield out of each flight.  If you have a 100 seat aircraft and you could sell 100 tickets at $100 apiece yielding 10,000 for the flight, and you could sell 10 tickets at $1,200 apiece yielding $12,000 for the flight, guess what the ticket price will be

YMMV

I use airfarewatchdog.com  I am able to set alerts for flights.  They let me know when an airline has a special rate.  Usually for a week long trip.

As an example, just got this notice today.  We are going to PI in August for 3 weeks and on PAL from JFK, I got tickets for $660 each.  Pick your airlines and sign up for notifications of specials.

Wow. That is more like it!  I will check them out too. I will probably have 4 or 5 trips after the two I already have booked.
