I wouldn't think so - should be the same everywhere.  Quite possible she wasn't familiar with it all - guy didn't even bat an eye and my husbands card was completely expired.  He barely looked at his license and took the NOA and old SS card and issued a new one.  So strange.  Also went and got signed up for TSA precheck with only the expired card, NOA and Driver's license.  Frustrating for you - sorry

Also, not sure if you saw that somebody posted this above - but it states the same thing.  Your person was not up on information apparently.

Always ask for a supervisor.

Not everyone knows the details of every rule or regulation and some fear punishment because they let something pass they aren't sure about.

When my husband tried to get a DL while waiting for his green card, the woman INSISTED that his info had to be put in as a I-551. I told her that it wouldn't come back as existing because he didn't have an I-551, and that she was suppose to use the I-797 NOA as proof that he had filed for one. We argued for about 5 minutes, I gave up, she ran it as a I-551 and it obviously came back as not having one. When we went to do his DL after he got his GC, I asked the person helping us about it all and they're like... well no, they should have used the I-797.

I've also seen a fair number of people have issues getting their SS card on a K-1 visa even though they're totally allowed too.


It always depends on who you get working at the desk you're sent too.


With that said, make sure you travel with the REAL I-797. If you have a copy, they can refuse to let you board. Most people just get told, hey by the way you need to have the real one next time, but they can stop you from coming back into the US if you use a photocopy of the I-797.

NOA Date was 5/19, no letter regarding Biometrics yet...

 

BUT I went to the MVD today and to renew my driver's license with the NOA letter and I had to problems at all. I was in and out with the my temporary license in less than 15 minutes. Luckily I live in an area with a lot of immigrants so the staff member was very familiar with the process. Totally forgot to ask how long the DL will be valid no but I guess I will find out soon and will report back then.

After reading this I'm getting really confused.. Seems like it is necessary to get a 1-551 Stamp if we need to travel outside America no matter what? Can anyone provide a link to USCIS's travel policy for petitioners who are waiting for approval on removing the condition?

Done with biometrics today. I was allotted time at 3 pm . But I reached there at 2pm. No one was there. And was out in 4 mins. 😃. All the best guys. Hope we receive green card soon.

Just wondering if any CSC filers after April 10th got biometrics dates or reuse letters?

 

I filed on April 12th, and received NOA1 on 5/28.

With regards to travel, it seems to be a crapshoot.

 

I'm going to Italy next month and messaged Norwegian (who I'm flying back with from Rome) on Twitter. They confirmed that the I-797 would be sufficient, and even went as far as to add a note about it to my booking, in case of any issues at check-in/boarding.

 

Can't quite believe this is how things operate here. We're supposed to carry a piece of paper around 24/7 to justify our legal status...haha. Plus nobody can actually confirm eligibility to travel (even though legally it's completely clear that it's sufficient just to carry the I-797 and expired GC). Absolute madness.

I agree.  This whole thing is such a mess.  So glad Norwegian was so accommodating. That's good to keep in mind in case of emergency. 

The I-797 does state on there that it serves to extend the GC for a year from the expiration date. But every government department you go to has its own view on how things work (often with no understanding).  

I'm not even going to start on the whole ordeal at the DMV last month, with countless documents and pieces of paper. Got there with no line and left - finally - two hours later. Kind of sad how they treat people who go through the legal process, pay the fees and 3.5 years later we are still running around with bits and pieces of paper just to complete a simple task that we once never gave a second thought about doing.  

We've just decided that we will not travel outside the US until we have my citizenship completed.

So which documents do they require at the DMV? Do I "have to" have the info pass stamp on my passport in order to renew my driver license? or can I just give them the I-797?

I'm tempted to do the same after this upcoming trip. It doesn't seem worth the risk given what I've read.

 

We only hear about the bad stories though; I'm sure there are thousands of people travelling without issues.

Not sure if this is state specific but I just renewed my license and all I needed was myth Green Card (which expires on sunday) and my NOA / Extension letter. No problems at all, I was in and out in less than 15 minutes.

Docs for Stamp  I-551 stamp on passport for international travel 

 

Hi - I'm planing for international travel with family so for I-551 stamp on Passport took infopass appointment, and want make sure needed documents - Expired Green Card, NOA1 - which shows one year of extension, Passport and Driver licence. if someone already went and got I-551 appointment on Passport, please suggest about needed docs if I'm missing anything,

I recently got my passport stamped but it was not easy. My GC expires on 6/22/18 and my Extension Letter will expire on 6/22/19. My extension letter took so long to arrive that my lawyer advice me to make an infopass appointment since we have an upcoming trip, my letter arrived 5 business days before my appointment but my lawyer still recommended us to try to get the I-551 stamp. 

 

The officer called me a few minutes before my appointment and I explained my situation, he told me that if I wanted the stamp he will need to shred my extension letter because if I had both most likely I was going to lose the extension letter . I promised him that I was not going to lose my extension letter if I got the stamp and that I had several trips coming up and I didn't want to risk to run into someone in customs that doesn't know what the letter means, he finally agreed to let me keep the extension letter and to stamp my passport. He assured me that I shouldn't have any problems with the extension letter and green card but that he will stamp my passport  just in case I lose my letter.
