I think we probably all use the term "flip flopped" more flippantly than we should in many circumstances. I'm not speaking about one side or the other here, but more generally.

 

Politicians should be able to change their opinions on topics. They are human, just like we are. They may not have all of the information, and after gaining information they may change their mind. Take the recent articles about Trump having changed his mind (allegedly) about some of his border wall plans. I know Trump seemed to take that as a slight and tried to argue otherwise, but I see nothing wrong with that. I would hope that a President is able to say "You know what, I didn't know all the details and I want to make the best decision with the best information so now that I have those details, my original plan isn't the best one". 

 

Similarly, I don't see Schumer and co. saying they aren't going to discuss immigration with the next budget talks as "flip flopping". If the public response to the shutdown really showed them that the majority of their constituents did not support them taking it that far, they SHOULD change their minds and plan differently. That is the proper response in that situation in my opinion. It's much better than if they tried to "stick to their guns" and pretend they are blind and deaf to the public reaction.

 

To me I would reserve term "flip flopping" for situations where a politician changes their mind but DENIES having ever held the previous position. Claiming that they've always had an opinion, when they clearly didn't a year ago, 5 years ago etc.... is dishonest and that, to me, is one of the key features of "flip flopping". If they can say openly that their opinions have changed, I see nothing wrong with that. In fact I would embrace it because I think that is a sign of a good politician. Not the only sign or requirement mind you, but it's a start.

 

EDIT: I guess I'd also add that frequent, short-lived opinions would also fall under a similar negative category, like "flip flopping". While I'm okay with politicians changing their minds, I don't want to see mixed messages within a day or two of each other. There still needs to be some degree of consistency. It has to be a balanced.

There are politicians who flip flop, and then there is Trump. People expect the president of the United States to be somewhat consistent, and just making it up as they go. I have nothing as against politicians who campaign on one thing, but do something much different while in office, and politicians who would rather ignore reality and continue on as they are, because doing the right thing may cost later, are not the kind of politicians you want in charge of anything. George H. W. Bush for example famously campaigned on not raising taxes, but after going to war with Iraq, went ahead and signed bills doing the opposite. Personally he was right to raise taxes. Wars cost money, and seeing as the entire political establishment at the time was in favor of war, it was the right and honest thing to do. If only his son would have been so wise.

I was in the middle of some chores when I realised I did in fact use an expletive in my original post. I must've gotten carried away, so I apologise for that. Perhaps I should considering running for President with a platform based on bigotry, racism and misogyny and see if my uh, choice language is more palatable then.
