Can someone please help me? My bank (Citizens' Bank) won't allow me to add my husband to my account unless he is here physically, but I want him to be added before his interview (which we are still waiting for our NOA2 so we still have time to get this done.)

I know it's not REQUIRED that we have a joint bank account, but I'd like it to be done.

Did anyone do this prior to their spouse coming to the US? If so, where do you bank??

Thanks in advance

Many banks (mine included) must have a copy of the document establishing legal status in the US..and it could be a banking regulation....FWIW.

I am pretty sure most, if not all banks, will require physical presence to add another person.  They require 2 forms of ID as well as signatures so that is something that he will need to be present for.

Are you a US citizen?  I have also opened bank accounts online but I had to fax them a copy of my IDs.

Big difference between a USC opening an account and a non-resident doing the same.

I know when we added my husband to my account he had to show his K1 visa to show his status in the United States.  As well as a second form of ID.  Maybe there is a bank out there that will let you add him with no problem.  I am not sure.  Let us know if you find one though.  Could be helpful to someone in the same boat in the future!

In the meantime, here is an old thread on the same topic.  Maybe it can help :)

no to all of the above

i did my 2010 taxes adding my husband and fillig the W7 to get his ITIN  (individual taxpayer ID number)

with that number you can add him as i did (credit union but still has to go by banking laws)

this is the same number given to foreigners working in US for tax and banking purposes

the only time you can get this number is NOW when filling tax returns

Working illegal immigrants seek an ITIN number for tax-paying purposes because they aren't eligible for a Social Security number. Both resident and nonresident aliens may have ITIN numbers. ... "There is no federal banking law that requires banks to verify the immigration status of foreign account holders," he says.Jun 1, 2005

spouse can  not have debit card till he is here but he can be on the account

Adil was granted the number with 2010 taxes in 2011 when i did them  / then added to my bank account and then to deed to my house

he was not in the US until 2015

need a POA from your spouse to do banking

As far as I know, banks require a proof of residence for accounts, and since your husband is not here yet, it only makes sense that they wouldn't allow it.

PS. Congratulations/Mabrook on your petition approval!

I asked BofA a few weeks ago. The rep said it's possible using Notary services to certify authenticity. I didn't ask any further questions but I'll go in the branch and ask again. I read somewhere that Citi Bank is also in Morocco. Maybe they have an established process.
