This whole thing is a big deflection from the fact that Elizabeth Warren appropriated tenuous NA connections for political purposes.  I guess she gets a pass.

The merits of the argument against Warren are irrelevant here. It doesn't matter whether or not Warren did something wrong. It was an event honouring Native American Veterans. It deserves to be treated with respect and not become a political podium.

People here cry a river over football athletes kneeling during our anthem because it is "disrespectful to Veterans" and yet they are perfectly find with our President throwing insults during an event to honour and...guess what....RESPECT OUR VETERANS. Hypocrisy at its finest.

Beyond hypocrisy bcking, and into the land of magical thinking that somehow there is even the merest shred of decency or decorum in Donald Trump. All evidence of such proved incorrect daily by the man himself.

"But you don't need to be a decent person to be President"...

As if that should make us feel any better...

Then where is the slight.  Last I heard Pocahontas was considered a heroine, so wouldn’t referring to Elizabeth Warren with her heritage as Pocahontas be a compliment?

Are you working for Trump now? You usually only hear that kind of spin coming out of the white house.

I don’t think so, but you can think whatever you want.  The whole point of this thread is the outrage from the MDL over Trump’s comment.  The perceived slur is only a slur if Elizabeth Warren has misrepresented herself as to her heritage.

Based on the actual comments Trump made, it appears that he was actually commending the code talkers, but of course the biased media is ignoring that.  Regardless, it doesn’t appear that the veteran code talkers being honored we offended by any of his remarks, but who cares about that.

Many native Americans consider the term offensive. Your argument keeps changing. I hope you are just missing something here but when I repeat the same argument and get progressively different responses back, it looks like it's just the goalposts moving. I don't see this discussion going anywhere productive. As such I am done. Par for the course though.

Not sure my argument has been changing although my comments have been.  The main point I am trying to make is the obsession the MDL has with manufacturing outrage relative to anything Trump utters.

It seems to be the bigger problem here is that the Trump Fan Club will essentially defend anything he says, and isn't willing to admit when he acts inappropriately.

He has used Pocahontas to refer to Warren before, and never in a positive light. It is quite obvious that he meant it as a negative jab at her.

As I've said whether or not she deserves it is irrelevant. We had a President poking fun at a political opponent during an event about military veterans. That is immensely disrespectful.

The people here who make such a fuss about standing for the anthem should be disappointed in our President. Given his position, he has far more responsibility to show respect. A pretty basic level of respect would be to treat an event as it deserves to be treated without making it a political podium.

This is a really basic issue. The fact that people deny it, why depending "respect" in other ways, is baffling. Makes me wonder if people really know what respect means.

Pocahontas is not even her name and context is everything. If I make the statement ''Pocahontas was a great Native American princess and amazing American heroine'' this would be both true and non-insulting. If I make a statement mocking you and using that name in an insulting context - it's considered rude, impolite, and obnoxious. It'd be like if I walked into the middle of a church and referred to a child molester in the same context as the Pope. Don't tell me people wouldn't be outraged.

I do find her claiming to be Native American, if she has no heritage however small, offensive... but that doesn't give others the right to be equally as offensive. I will also point out that during years of genealogy research, being one of my hobbies, there is a large part of Americans that make similar claims, regardless of any shred of truth... it's one of the most least accurate common genealogical tropes... and no doubt you've heard it repeated yourself in your own family. An aunt of mine often repeated she was part Cherokee (my research shows this is flat out false), whereas one of my aunts actually does have Nanticoke heritage. Dad always thought he was Italian... that was absolutely incorrect too.

There are a lot better ways to criticize Warren's behavior... but it certainly did not belong at an event for Veterans.

Have they publicly said they weren't?

I've already posted a link to veterans groups saying they took offense.

The is similar to the kneeling for the anthem issue. Not all soldiers were offended, and yet people are still up in arms about that.

It's a pretty clear double standard and a great example of hypocrisy.

You are right.  We should probably start a new thread discussing Elizabeth Warren’s cultural appropriation for political purposes.
