Anti-Gun Group Wants To Ban Muzzleloaders For Mass Casualty Potential

Muzzleloaders could be "the next bump stock," and should be regulated, an anti-gun group said.

Washington, DC – A gun control group showcased just how little firearms knowledge it really has on Wednesday, when it warned Americans about the catastrophic threat of muzzleloaders.

In a report titled, “Legal and Lethal: 9 Products That Could Be the Next Bump Stock,” former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords’s anti-gun group unveiled a list of guns and products it deems have the potential to be converted into “military style weapons” in order to create “maximum carnage.”

“Cue the .50 caliber muzzleloader,” the report ominously introduced, “which delivers a particularly lethal .50 caliber round.”

“There’s actually a company that’s trying to jump through a loophole...and create a muzzle that can be shot with a silencer that shoots .50 caliber bullets. That can do a lot of damage,” New York City Council Member Jumaane Williams explained in a Thursday interview with Fox News.

How many people still shoot muzzleloaders? I'm sure collectors have them, but are they actually in working order and used with any frequency? Outside of war reenactments.

sometimes used for hunting as it is far more challenging.

I agree I have known a few people to still use black powder rifles due to how challenging it is.

Our founding fathers probably would have had an easier time envisioning people trying to pass legislation about muzzleloaders than assault rifles. At least it is technology that they had available.

We have black powder hunting seasons here. It seems popular, but I've heard it's difficult to master. My neighbors certainly have them and use them.

Honest question from someone who doesn’t know, and I will answer it with... LOTS.

But it signifies the lack of understanding of the majority of Americans about guns.  (No offense, BCK)

There are actually special seasons for hunting with muzzleloaders, often starting before (deer/turkey/coyote/nameyourtarget) season, and continuing thru and even past regular gun season.  Because muzzleloaders are much slower to reload, and make quite a mess when shot, they remove a LOT of the advantage a hunter has with smokeless rifles.

ETA: Modern muzzleloaders are quite accurate, and often use scopes for aiming. However, they remain a single-shot type of weapon, thereby negating any advantage of a rapid-fire weapon.

Don't many states often allow muzzleloader for hunting at the same time as bow season?

Ya I openly admit my lack of understanding about firearms in a lot of ways.

I just imagined they were more things that would be like hung above the fireplace or something.

When I was taught American History I seem to recall learning that those old rifles would misfire a lot and were actually quite dangerous (they could just up and explode in your hand). Are the ones people use today an improvement on the originals or are people using ones that are designed in the exact same way? If they are the old style - How often are their complications?

Sort of... typically bow season starts, then muzzle, then gun, then muzzle ends, then bow ends.  But sometimes bow is shut down during rifle season, only to open again after rifle season closes.  Depends on the state.

I know in Michigan you can hunt with a bow even during rifle season, but you are required to wear more visible clothing.  Not sure about muzzleloaders as I never shot one of those.

MUCH improved.  I have one that is several years old, but it is 100% on firing, and VERY accurate, for what it is.  Most are rifled, use plastic sabots, and efficient copper-clad bullets.  Some people want to stay more “pure” and use balls to shoot with, and often mold their own.  But I think they are the minority.

A muzzleloader will never achieve the accuracy nor the fire rate of a bolt action rifle (that of course makes them MUCH slower than a semi-auto rifle), but if you pull the trigger, it goes BOOM.  Whether or not you hit your target depends on your skill level.  Shooting a muzzleloader is quite a bit different than a modern cartridge round.
