Definitely a peculiar division between NYC and Queens, especially if the rooms are in consecutive order and then Queens is just a subsect of NYC? Oh well, let USCIS operate in whatever way they want..

 

Also, @Going through, what did your online time estimate look like before getting the interview notification and after? I know people say that the estimate is pretty much useless, but curious if the number of months was/is somewhat accurate in your case. For reference, mine says 6 months expected until interview, 8 months until citizenship.

Before I was scheduled for my interview, my case estimation time was 6 months for my interview to be scheduled.

Since I have gotten my interview letter in the mail, the case estimation time STILL says 6 months for my interview to be scheduled.

 

Yeah, those estimated times are completely unreliable/glitchy from what I've seen from my own case, and reading other's experiences on here.

Although I am days away from completing my Naturalization process, I wanted to chime in for those who may find it useful. The whole process took me just under 10 months from start to finish. I did however ask for a delayed Oath Ceremony at my interview, so please take that into account. So I've also included the date the Queens Field office wanted to schedule my Oath Ceremony so that it better reflects the actual timeframe which would have been more like 9 months.

At my interview I had requested that my Oath Ceremony be after September, 4^th 2017 and my interviewer added the note to my file. The Queens office did fantastic job of honoring my request because although I received an Oath Ceremony date for August 22^nd they had already caught their “error” (I don’t want to even call it that as they were doing me a favor) and descheduled it on my behalf. Therefore I did not have to go through the formal process of requesting (or debating whether I should request) a new Oath Ceremony date.

I filed online----yes.  The letter will show NBC with an IOE application number.

 

NBC's primary role is to assist in case preparation for applications that require field office interviews.  They control your application until it is dispersed to the field office for scheduling.

 

From USCIS's website:

 

Centralizing the initial processing of N-400s at the NBC increases the efficiency of case management and improves customer service. The NBC will focus on creating and maintaining applicant files, completing national security checks, and various other processing steps.  The NBC will also hold all N-400 cases waiting for adjudicative interview.  Field Offices will make requests to only one site, the NBC, for cases to be retrieved and mailed in a much more efficient and time-sensitive fashion.  Customer inquiries will only travel back to this one site, affording quicker response time and daily resolution for customer inquiries.

 

Q:  What will the N-400 process be at the NBC?
A:  The NBC will perform pre-interview processing in much the same manner as the Service Centers have done for the last several years.  Background checks will be initiated and completed, and applicant A-files will be requested and received.  A complete file review will be performed on cases and NBC will issue a notice to the applicant if the applicant needs to bring additional evidence to the interview at the local USCIS Field Office.  Further improvements of the N-400 process will be implemented as the NBC process is refined to provide, to the extent possible, decision-ready cases for Field Offices at the time of interview and to reduce the number of continuances at the time of interview.

NBC makes the process more streamlined on the administrative side for USCIS, I suppose.  Better than having inconsistencies in how applications/background checks are deemed "completed" before sitting down for the interview, for people.

Was gonna just share a link to my previous post but I'll paste here for the sake of convenience.

This is what I wrote just a few hours after my interview on 09/12 at Federal Plaza:

I'm back from my interview. It went well but I still got hit with the "A decision cannot yet be made about your application". Interviewing officer was very professional and friendly. I did the usual swearing in and then she proceeded to go through all the questions on my application. She paused between a few questions to ask following questions but no big deal. She was hinting at approval even before I took the civics test. She ask if I brought two passport sized photos. I didn't...she advised me to walk with them for the oath (had not taken civics test yet). She then proceeding to the reading and writing test (see below).

 

I was asked to read the second of three questions:

Read: What country is north of America?
Write: (on line 2) Canada is north of America.

 

We then moved on to the civics test. Here are the questions (may not be in order).

Why did the colonist fight the British?
Who makes federal laws?
What is the highest court in the United States?
Who is the vice president?
How many amendments are there to the Constitution?
What group of people were taken to America and sold as slaves?

 

I answered the first six questions correctly. I got a "congratulations, I'll be recommending you for citizenship". I was super excited. I thank her. I didn't look at Form N-652 till I was well on my way home. That's when I saw that "decision cannot be made". I'm not going to sweat this yet. I've seen many post on this with people in similar situations and it works out. From what I've been reading I think this delaying in recommendation for citizenship has to do with seniority. I'm not saying a younger person can't be a superior but my interviewing officer seemed very young. 

 

Over experience was good. Actual interview was great. I'd brought a lot of documents but she was only interested in recent bank statements (post removal of conditions) and my passports (valid and expired). 

 

Actual interview took less than 10 mins.

 

Will be back later...gonna go catch some zs.
