Over the years there have been people refused entry at the border because the letter isn't recognized by either Mexico or Canada to enter the country.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

Hmm. Mexico seems to make this hard - latest info I could find was from their SF consulate. https://consulmex.sre.gob.mx/sanfrancisco/index.php/visas-traveling-to-mexico

US Residents: If your United States visa stamped on your passport already expired but you have an official document proving your legal status in USA, you must apply for a Mexican visa (I-797 A Forms, Advance Parole Forms, I-20 OR DS-2019 Forms won’t be accepted to entering Mexico), unless you have a valid Visa for any of the countries listed above (Canada, Japan, United Kingdom or Schengen area) .

It certainly sounds like they won't accept an expired green card with I-797A. Best bet is to get an infopass appointment and an I-551 adit stamp in your passport (or apply for Mexican visa, of course).

It still isn't definitive because a green card is not a stamped visa in your passport.  Mexico says you have to have a valid green card.  I guess valid is up for interpretation. Other option is to travel on your passport of your nationality.  My family is going to Mexico for Thanksgiving and we have the same issue that her green card is expired.  She has a Brazilian passport and Brazilians don't need a visa to go to Mexico.  So she travels as a Brazilian...  and for her return she will have her I797 letter and expired green card.

I JUST went to mexico with green card ( I'm Canadian) I didn't show them a green card as I sort of figured it might cause me problems. Mine is expired and I have an extension on it while i'm waiting for it to renew. I just simply showed them my passport and my wifes passport. I had absolutely no problems and the only questions that were asked were the usual where are you going, how long are you going for, what is purpose of travel exc. We had a fantastic time. Just use your passport and don't sweat it!

But you don’t normally need a visa for Mexico on a Canadian passport, right? The issue is for those people who do normally need a visa but get an exemption through having a green card.

Hi all! I see everyone is asking whether they can enter Mexico on expired green card, and I am more curious about getting back to USA with expired GC and extension letter. Has anyone had problems with it? I live close to the border and wanted to go to see a dentist, there is a very good office in Tijuana, but I am afraid that because of the new administration I won't be allowed to come back to USA. Please, tell me that this never happens.

I have expired green card, extension letter that will expire in January 2018, valid international passport without I-94 (it was taken on the first interview), expired Californian ID and a note from DMV that I applied for ID. Thank you in advance.

My GC expired on November 15th, 2019. I am in possession of an extension letter for my daughter and I – she’s 12yrs old. We went to Mexico on January 23-26, 2020. We both used our GC and extension letters and were granted access with zero questions asked. No worries, book your trip and go.

Oh, coming back to the US should be the least of your concerns. The extension letter was granted by the Immigration Department, of course they'll let you back in. The GC and letter MUST accompany each other along with your passport. My daughter and I got back in from Mexico with a breeze. Literally, the officer didn't ask any questions.
