That's an impressive red herring you caught.

lots of similarities.........
civil war between north and south - check

war of northern aggression to reunify the country - check
the south lost - check

Removing the statue will only open up every monument or national park to some nut cake from the far right or left to try shut it down or have it removed.

My wife was born in Atlanta near Kennesaw mountain, last trip over we went to the Kennesaw Battlefied Park. During the civil war the mountain was the final hurdle before Atlanta fell, it's history so it has to be told.

Shouldn't be too much longer before "In God We Trust" is removed from the US currency, the atheists must be due to have that removed at some point.

You're talking about two different things. History can and must be told, especially because we need to ensure that every generation understands the types of freedoms and liberties that were at stake during the civil war. To teach history however, you don't need the statues or the confederate flag. It's no different than having and keeping statues of pedophile priests in your country, just because they are part of history. There are certain things in history that must be remembered and taught, which doesn't mean they should also be celebrated.

The inscriptions in the US dollar have nothing to do with the Civil War, nor were they added by the Confederacy. :ot:

The thread went off topic long before I posted so anything goes. My comment about the currency change was to do with political correctness going too far. If you genuinely believe the statue should be removed then you will open the floodgates to more silly political correctness, it's a waste of money. I read an article earlier that a high school in Vermont is changing the nickname of their football team the rebels because it offends some people. Vermont was on the Union side but finds the rebel name is too close to the confederacy.

The other day you made a reference to someone drinking too much Jameson and now it's statues of paedophile priests in my country. Not very politically correct of you to be stereo typing the Irish in that manner. I neither drink whiskey nor know of any statues to paedophile priests. It's a poor way to make your point, you could have made a reference to how the Union Jack might be offensive to some Irish people and it would have been a fairer comparison.

that's ridiculous. the call for the confederate nonsense to end wasn't just because of one murdering racist.  i swear i see more confederate flags in a day than the us flag. and i'm not even in the 'actual' south.

You should move up here. No confederate flags, but lots of BLM signs.

naw, if i go that way - i'm headed straight over the border. i actually really enjoy living in an area full of history. i like looking out off my back porch, hearing the train running across the fields knowing that my ancestors built that railroad. i can visit any number of historic battlefields and know that my ancestors might have stood exactly where i'm standing. it is possible to be proud of what you come from while recognizing the reality of what you're not so proud of. confederate flags don't bother me, but some folks' flippancy towards what the flag means to some of our fellow americans, does.

My point was would you feel comfortable with the statue of a pedophile priest in your town? I guess the answer to that it no. Every country has dark pages in their history book. Removing the statues and putting them in museums along with the confederate flag does not do away with history, but it helps stop promoting the celebration and cult they still entail.

Exactly.  It's not what the flag was but what it is. It was made the symbol of hate by white segregationist, kkk and many states who used it in the fight against civil rights and segregation.

It's a little to late for the it's not hate it's history argument.

not quite exactly. i'm not black so it really doesn't matter if i'm bothered by the flag or not. i don't have to wonder if every bumpkin i see flying one is a racist like the tiki torch carriers in the op or just proponents of misplaced southern pride. can you imagine what black families in charlottesville and the surrounding areas are going through right now..black parents afraid for their children? it makes me sick that these ignorant white people are 1.falling in line behind a known racist and 2.using 'heritage' as a prop to further their racism and justify their intimidation and violence.

i understand the 'its not hate its history argument' but it truly falls short when considering the southern black perspective.

Someone should notify UNESCO about the Alamo monument which also has links to slavery. It might be time to remove it's status as a world heritage site.

What about General Custer monuments surely they are offensive to native Americans and should be removed also.

There will always be something that someone finds offensive about part of your countries history it doesn't mean it has to be removed or hidden.

These statues and monuments to the Confederacy should be places in a museum, where they aren't hidden. Surely they don't belong in public places.

I don't think the Civil War was offensive. It happened; it shouldn't happen again, and certainly it shouldn't be celebrated. As with many other artifacts from wars past, these statues and the flag should be placed in a museum, where they will receive the appropriate context.
