A torch-wielding mob chanting racist slogans descended on a Charlottesville, Virginia, park Saturday evening, to protest the removal of a Robert E. Lee statue.

Chanting "All White Lives Matter," and "No More Brother Wars," the crowd, which said they were protecting their "white heritage" from the Charlottesville City Council's decision to remove a statue in the Virginia town's park.

They also chanted "You will not replace us" and "Russia is our friend." Dozens of protesters also brought bamboo tiki torches to a second rally once it became dark out.

The Southerners have to be the biggest sore losers of all time. I know because I'm from the South and grew up around billowing Confederate flags and the lamenting of rednecks of the loss of their heritage. It's just pathetic really.

In my hometown, there are high schools in predominately black neighborhoods named after Confederate generals and even KKK members. The South really is that bad sometimes.

Feeling Kinship With The South, Northerners Let Their Confederate Flags Fly

Listen·3:453:45Queue
May 4, 20175:00 AM ET
Heard on Morning Edition

When 60-year-old Owen Golay talks about the two Confederate flags he flies in his front yard, he sounds like many Southern defenders of such symbols.

"It stands for heritage; it's a part of our history," Golay said.

But it's not really his history. Golay lives in rural Pleasantville, Iowa, about 40 miles from where he was born. He still carries a small Confederate flag that his father gave him as a child. But aside from some people way back in his family tree who fought on both sides in the Civil War, he has no real ties to the South.

Golay says his interest in Civil War history and symbols deepened during the Obama administration, when he felt President Obama was overstepping his executive authority. He says he feels a resonance today with 19th century Southerners' resistance to what they saw as federal overreach.

Owen Golay, 60, runs a heating and cooling business in Pleasantville, Iowa. Although he's a native Iowan, he says he's drawn to the Confederate flag and what he describes as Southern history and heritage.

Sarah McCammon/NPR

"Those people were fighting for states' rights, and the freedom to make their own way and to choose their own way against a tyrannical federal government," Golay said.

Owen Golay's friend Bruce Peterson, 65, shares his fascination with Civil War history and memorabilia. Peterson spent part of his childhood in Louisiana, but now he lives about an hour away from Golay in the small town of Earlham, Iowa, where he sometimes flies the Confederate flag.

During a recent visit to his friend's front porch, Peterson says most of the Iowans he's known who are into Confederate symbols also feel a solidarity with the Confederate South.

"They wanted their independence, they wanted a smaller government. I find that a lot in people, it's just that rebelliousness," Peterson said.

Golay insists the South was misunderstood, and rejects the consensus among professional historians that slavery was the primary driver of the Civil War. He says the flag isn't about race for him.

"As far as the racism goes, I dismiss it, because I'm not racist whatsoever. That flag doesn't mean that to me," Golay said.

But it does for many others, including historian Randal Jelks, professor of American Studies and African and African American Studies at the University of Kansas. Jelks says the Confederacy was set up to protect slavery, and its flags will always represent that.

"It is about a certain way of life that people have a nostalgia about, and that's always dangerous," Jelks said. "Because as I tell my kids all the time, the good old days weren't as good as people claim they were, they just imagine them to be."

Still, that nostalgia seems to be growing. Last year, there were reports of several incidents where supporters of then-candidate Donald Trump displayed Confederate symbols at pro-Trump events nationwide - including in the North.

In one case, a police officer in Traverse City, Mich. was forced to resign after pulling up to an anti-Trump rally in a truck displaying a Confederate flag. Protestors said he revved his engine at them.

We need an effective strategy to deal with the young people who get poisoned with this stuff. They start out on the margins so I doubt marginalizing them more will help.

Sorry I might be one of those "Sore Losers" you are talking about. I grew up in NC as I have stated before on here, and if you didn't know NC was one of the last states to actually go for the Confederacy. We sent off more people to go and fight than almost any other state, but we also had the most desertions as well. I can be proud that my ancestor a poor farmer(had no slaves) went off and served his two years in the Confederate Army before he came back home.

Now that I have put that out there I will put my .02 cents in to this argument. I think that all this PC BS about how we need to remove the monuments because of this or that is complete BS. It is apart of our history wither people think it is good or bad it is there. The people that want to remove everything are the same people that want us to conform to their way of thinking and living, it just does not work out like that. The South right now is having an identity crisis all around because of the amount of transplants that moving down to our lower COL states from the North and just trying to change everything that they think is wrong with our society. How the Confederate Monuments and Flags are a reminder of when people owned other people.

Sorry to bust people's bubbles and alot of people don't know this but Black People OWNED slaves as well. This fact is often not known or discussed out in the open to much. Also there are a fair number of Black People, Latinos, Indians who fought on the side of the Confederacy. So just saying it was all white people is wrong.

A fair number of people in the South both Black and White wave the Rebel(Confederate) Flag and wear all kinds of clothing with it on. Just go down to Daytona or Myrtle Beach on Bike Week or Black Bike Week and you will see people wearing it without a problem. I admit I used wear shirts with it on in the past when I was a teenager and I had a Rebel flag license plate on my car. But for me it is about nostalgia supporting my heritage.

This is not poison just having a flag or memorabilia. Poison is people actually joining Neo-Nazi/KKK movements because they hate anyone of a different color.
