Hi, I have a valid B1/B2 visa and has used it previously. Can I use that instead of applying for a parole if I ever decide to have a trip back to my home country to attend some family gathering after entering the US on a K1 visa?

Your B2 will not be valid anymore.

You have to wait until you get your AP or GC so you can get back in again and don't have to start all over again.

Thanks for the reply. :)

Oh that's sad. Gotta have to bid adieu for a while then. Heard  AOS and getting a gc takes some time. Hopefully it wouldn't take as long for an AP approval.

It will take around 3-4 months from when you file your AOS package including the EAD and AP to get the combo card. GC can take anywhere from 3 months to over a year.

Not too bad. Had become somewhat of an expert in the waiting game through the entire K1 process. Ha, 3-4 months, I'll be ready for you. ?

Thank you for taking time in replying to my queries. :)

Unfortunately you cannot. Once your K1 visa is approved, your B2 visa will be canceled without prejudice. Stamped boldly and it's yuugeee. So you can't miss it. Only way to travel outside the US is to AOS immediately once you got married  (apply the advanced parole as well).

Hope this helps

Just a point of clarification.  You can travel outside of the US prior to receiving either the AP or GC, you just won't be able to return as the K1 and visitor visas will now be expired/canceled. In other words, no one is holding anyone hostage in the US, they just make it more difficult to get back in.

good Luck!

no. after your get approved during the interview, the embassy will take your passport, cancel your B1/B2 and then stamp your K1 visa.

also note that you can only enter once using a k1 visa. if you exit the US after that, without first getting your AP or your green card (whichever comes first), that will be taken as you abandoning your k1 process and you will need a new visa to re enter the US.
