New Jersey Governor Chris Christie on Tuesday vetoed a bill to raise the state's minimum wage to $15 per hour over the next five years.

The legislation would have made New Jersey the third state to adopt a $15 per hour minimum wage, Christie said in a statement.

State voters agreed to a previous wage hike in 2013, to $8.25 from $7.25. New Jersey's rate is tied to the consumer price index and is now at $8.38, according to a database from the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL).

"Despite having a constitutional mandate in place, the legislature now wants to increase the minimum wage by almost 80 percent just three years later," Christie said in a statement about his veto.

Raising min wage to $15 an hour would do nothing to help working people. It would cause companies to lay people off, and raise prices to make up the difference. In VT they are in the process of raising it to $10 an hour and every time a raise kicks in even the price of coffee at DD spikes. Now, you could say "ok, it might not help, but at least it won't hurt" because the price increase will likely be equal or less than the wage hike. However, there are people that this would severely hurt and it's those who can't find a job at all. If today they can still afford a few things, the more prices rise the less they'll be able to afford. I'd have to take Christie's side on this one.

Of course he did. New Jersey voters need to get off of the Republicant plantation. It's an expensive state, if wages don't match the cost of living the people of New Jersey will continue to live below poverty line.

The Democratic-controlled state legislature passed the measure in June, and intends to pass a constitutional amendment that would raise the minimum wage without needing gubernatorial approval. Last summer, when Christie still thought he had a chance at president, he indicated that he might be open to raising the minimum wage to $10 an hour, after vetoing a minimum wage bill in 2013. Legislators circumvented that veto by putting a $1 raise on the ballot later that year, which voters passed with 61 percent approval. The minimum wage in New Jersey is currently $8.38.

The governor announced this years veto during an appearance at a grocery store in Pennington on Tuesday. New Jersey Advance reports:

Christie argued more employees would be replaced by automated kiosks at small businesses if the state continues to hike its minimum wage.

Thats the way of the future if we continue to do this really radical increase with the minimum wage, Christie said.

All of this sounds great, raising the minimum wage, when youre spending someone elses money, he said. It should bother you because when you come into Pennington Quality Market your food is going to be more expensive.

A liberal think tank based in Trenton, New Jersey Policy Perspective, has estimated that 975,000 people would benefit from the increase.

Of course, all the glutton is worried about is his grocery bill!!!!!!!

Did Cristie blame women again for his veto? It's the reason why he doesn't want self-serve gas apparently.

Living Wage Calculation for Bergen County, New Jersey

The living wage shown is the hourly rate that an individual must earn to support their family, if they are the sole provider and are working full-time (2080 hours per year). All values are per adult in a family unless otherwise noted. The state minimum wage is the same for all individuals, regardless of how many dependents they may have. The poverty rate is typically quoted as gross annual income. We have converted it to an hourly wage for the sake of comparison.

Minimum wage in the 1960s was twice what it is today (adjusting for inflation). So $15 would get us back to 1960s wages. And if it was good enough for the 1960s why it is unfeasible today? I thought people wanted to get back to the way things used to be.

Funny that you guys always have to pick and choose and omit what doesn't fit your agenda. If you want to go back to how things used to be so badly, why the 60's? Why not the 40's? Because even inflation adjusted minimum wage today is still more than twice as high as it was then. If it was good enough for the 40's why is it unfeasible today?

I think most people mean the post war years when they refer to the good ole days. Usually that means the 50's when Eisenhower was President not the 40's.

Because wages in the pre-war 1940s were artificially low due the the great depression which triggered the necessity of Social Security, the 40 hour work week and minimum wage. I would'nt compare the value of your home to 1940 and today, I sure as heck would not compare the value of your labor.
