Just had infopass appointment in Washington DC field office. No one there. I was the only person in the waiting room. Called to window after 5 min wait. Nice officer, straight away he guessed I wanted a stamp. No questions asked. I am 51 days from the exact Green Card expiry date.  My new I551 stamp is valid for a year.

I asked about my case. He said it is in "pre adjudication" apparently. So about to be assigned to an officer for adjudication.

He said he's recommending everyone to apply for N400 if they want to.

He said the letter extends the expiry date on your green card by 1 year. Nothing to do with the NOA date on the letter.

He also joked that 2 people cried last week when surrendering their green cards for the stamp, and I asked if I was going to do the same. I informed him I didn't plan to. Aha.

Very painless process. On we go.....

That's good to know teknodude 😁 Now I have an idea when to get stamp as the letter extends our green card and not based on the NOA date. Did you make an infopass online? Or you can go directly in local office without appointment

General wisdom seems to be to get an appointment for your stamp a month before your extension runs out. There is confusion over the expiration of the extension letter. Most seem to agree that it extends the green card's expiration date by one year, but some (including some USCIS sources, and also DMVs) have been adamant that the extension expires one year from the date on the letter. You can find a lot more discussion on this topic by searching VJ, or probably even reading back through this thread.

There is no hurry to file N400. You can file as soon as your window opens, or wait several months, or even years, or never do it at all (i.e. just renew your green card ever 10 years). As long as you have fulfilled the eligibility requirements at the time of filing (based on the immediately preceding 3 or 5 years, depending if you're filing based on marriage or not), you can go for it.

From my experience in NC and MA DMV's, they treat the extension letter as to extend one year on the Green Card expropriation date. I also traveled overseas (not to my original country) 4 times with the extension letter, I had no problems at all. The first time I traveled, I did ask the custom officer about the letter, he told me it means one more year on the Green Card expiration date.

Personal experience.

Yay! So glad it's been going so smoothly for you! :-) We've also had no problems whatsoever and have also only encountered interpretations about one year from the GC expiration date, thank goodness. (I was mainly giving a heads up that several people have reported experiencing the opposite, i.e. officials that insist on one year from the letter date, so it's good at least know that this can be an issue, even if it hopefully won't be.) Now, if only the ROC adjudication would kick into gear...

In all the months I have been looking, mostly out of interest before I needed one, there usually only seemed to be appointments 14 days out, with the odd one or two on other days but very rarely. I was just lucky more than anything else.

I guess is why it's worth checking often as cancellations creep in to the system.

One point to note - big signs up in the D.C. field office stating the office DOES NOT ACCEPT WALK-INS under any circumstances.

Don't know about other field offices.

Thanks teknodude, yeah you been lucky. But anyway my gc will expire on 9/19 so I still have some time to wait if I will be lucky too to hear from VSC of any approval before 1 yr gc expires. Hoping and praying, I don't know either but I think it's better to get infopass than going to field office and find out that they don't accept walk-ins especially if you drive like hours 😄. Sorry if my English is not that good lol I'm filipina :D
