Police are to be handed sweeping powers to hack into people's phones and computers and spy on their web-browsing histories under draconian new laws published today.

Home Secretary Theresa May has announced a massive extension of the spying powers originally drawn up to help the security services fight terrorists.

Under the draft version of the Investigatory Powers Bill published last year – dubbed the 'Snooper's Charter' – the most intrusive spying powers would only have been available to spy agencies MI5 , MI6 and GCHQ.

But under a rewritten version unveiled today Mrs May said police should also be allowed to spy on people's internet use as part of their everyday work.

In a move that will dismay privacy campaigners, her new-look 'Snooper's Charter' gives cops the power to spy on people's web browsing history whenever they deem it “necessary” as part of any investigation.

This will result in a boon in VPN use and people surfing the net with Tor. It is an utterly ghastly violation of privacy.

In Orwell's 1984 there were TVs and cameras in all rooms so that the powers that be could watch you all the time. This is a concrete step toward that. No TV, no camera, but you can often learn more about a person based on what they are surfing than simply watching them eating food and lying around their house anyway.

Good luck!

Just give it a catchy name (see:Patriot Act) and people will smile and wave flags as they sign up for their free spy cam and tracking software.

Haha, true, but unfortunately for the people behind this, the term the UK has adopted for it is the "Snooper's Charter".

God, I'm glad I don't live in England anymore.

Conservative governments hate freedom;

They do, agreed. But so do liberal ones. Governments are formed by people who tend to want to enhance their own influence and will do it unless they are stopped by the populous or laws.

Good luck!

Not so quick. I'm sure they are able to turn on the cameras on your computer so it's only a matter of time. And the new smart TVs have the ability to video too I've read. We've already set up all the hardware for them! I have a dlink camera for when we're out of town, read it's really easy to hack too! Great.

God, I'm glad I don't live in England anymore.

We split after we got sick of having cameras on us everywhere -- speed cameras, traffic cameras, etc. It's ridiculous that I couldn't even go out to get the paper on foot without getting snapped at least three times during the five minute round trip.

The traditional lack of a right to privacy in English common law was something that as an American in law school over there boggled the mind. Really the only way (and probably still the only way -- forgive me, but I don't keep up with developments in English law anymore) at the time to enforce any breach of privacy was through the European Convention on Human Rights, as effected through the Human Rights Act, and based on a "breach of confidence." Totally bogus.

As an aside, there are some really messed up Newport ads out there.

Now that's funny. Looks like an ad from Playboy in the 70s.
