At least four people were injured in a machete attack at an Ohio restaurant before police shot and killed the suspect Thursday night.

The FBI and Columbus police are working to piece together a motive behind the attack, which includes running down the possibility that this was a terror-related incident, a law enforcement source tells Fox News. The attacker was identified as Mohammad Barry, a separate law enforcement source familiar with the investigation said.

The attack occurred at Nazareth Restaurant and Deli, a Mediterranean eatery, in Columbus. Police said the man walked into the restaurant, had a conversation with an employee and left.

About a half hour later, the attacker returned, approached a man and a woman at a table near the doorway and started his rampage.

“He came in and started beating up on another man, I thought it was a personal thing. Then he just started down the row hitting everybody; people were bleeding,” Karen Bass, a restaurant patron, told My Fox 28 Columbus.

The man eventually fled the scene in a white car and led police on a short chase. Officers forced him off the road a few miles away. When the suspect got out of his car, police said they tried unsuccessfully to use a stun gun on him.

Columbus police Sgt. Rick Weiner said, "At that point he had a machete and another knife in his hand and he lunged across the hood at the officers."

That's when police said an officer shot and killed the man. It remained unclear what sparked the attacks.

“There was no rhyme or reason as to who he was going after,” said Weiner. “There’s nothing that leads us to believe that this is anything but a random attack."

The four victims were taken to a local hospital and are expected to survive.

Owner thinks his restaurant was targeted in machete attack

COLUMBUS (WCMH)– Hany Baransi was at home Thursday night when he got a message from one of his cooks that a man with a machete was in his restaurant.

Baransi, the owner of Nazareth Restaurant and Deli, rushed back to work.

“Employees told me he came in and looked around, asked where I was from, what food we have, where was I,” said Baransi.

The question everyone continues to ask is “Why?”

The business owner is from Israel, and has his native country’s flag right next to the American flag. When asked if he felt he was targeted, he said yes. “I hope I’m wrong. I hope it’s not the case.

“I’ve been crying. Like, I’m a 50-year-old man. Been crying like a baby for the last 12 hours,” said Baransi.

The victim who was most critically injured was Bill Foley, a local singer and entertainer.

He had been singing at the restaurant the night of the attack.

NBC4 spoke to one of his fans, Bonnie Stern.

“It’s just devastating to his fans and his friends. Everybody is just very in shock, upset and sad,” said Stern.

Now, Baransi’s focus is on his friends, customers and future.

“For customers, thanks for the support, and live, we’ll get cleaned up, you get knocked down you get up again. God bless you, and I love you,” he said.

Suspect in restaurant machete attack was on FBI’s radar

COLUMBUS (WCMH) — Police have identified the suspect who was shot and killed following a violent machete attack at a northeast Columbus restaurant.

Police say Mohamed Barry, 30, walked into the Nazareth Restaurant and Deli on North Hamilton Road and attacked four people using a machete. He then fled the scene in a white vehicle.

A police helicopter located the vehicle, and officers were then able to maneuver the suspect off the road. Sgt. Rich Weiner said Barry then attempted to get out of the passenger side of the vehicle, and an officer Tased him with no effect.

When Barry lunged at an officer with a machete and a knife in his hand, Columbus Police Officer John Johnson, a 25 year veteran of the force, fired two shots from his duty weapon, striking and killing Barry.

Law enforcement officials say the FBI was looking at Barry for expressing radical Islamic views four years ago. For an unknown reason, the FBI moved on from him in their investigation.

He was in an FBI database, but the feds were not surveilling him at the time of last night’s attack. Law enforcement officials tell NBC News it is too soon to tell why he picked this restaurant, and say it’s also too soon to speculate on his possible affiliation with any specific groups.

In this one, a man with a CPL stopped the attack and most likely saved the mother's life without firing a shot (can you say responsible gun owner). Contrary to many reports, the man with the gun was not fired, and will be back at work next Monday after a paid leave for the investigation.
