Hi guys,

I have a question about the interview of K-1 visa. Do you think the interviewer will ask me about whether my parents are aware of it? The situation is that i haven't told them yet and I was planing to do it after for some reasons. So I wonder if it'll effect the consequence of the interview. That would be great that i could get some advice from you guys. Thanks.

Sincerely,

Ting

I have never heard of CO asking an adult if they parents are aware of relationship.

They are concerned to see if you have bona fide relationship with your fiance

It comes up every now and then.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

Yes it is possible you could be asked that. You could be asked ANYTHING that would help them determine if you have a bonafide relationship.

It's a fairly common topic. That being said, if it comes up in the interview just tell the truth.

We are expecting that question from our embassy. In my situation, I have only told one of my parents, but a mitigating factor is that I have not lived under my parents for several years. (many, many years) Try to think of any mitigating factors for you. Are you living with your parents? If not, then even if they don't know, that may not affect your life so much. If you are living with your parents, it would be great to know the move out date. I think the point of this question is to see the legitimacy of the relationship, but it's not a major factor. If the parents know and have accepted everything, then awesome! If we have not revealed it, then there may be a legitimate reason, such as the parent's views on immigration, racial bias, or other things that could affect their support of the relationship. Thankfully, American culture does not require us to live under our parents for our whole lives or require parental permission/acceptance of the mate of our choice. If you get this question, try to provide a one sentence answer on why this will not and does not affect your relationship now and in the future.

They do sometimes ask if either of you ever met or contacted each other's parents/siblings etc.

They might if the answer to your first question indicates the parents are aware and/or support the beneficiary. But if the parents aren't aware, then you can scratch this one off the list. (It's a good question, though! I'm adding it to our potential list!)

Yes, several VJ posters have mentioned it in the past...though it's probably not a common question for most.

In some African and middle east countries, I recall that the consulate office went even as far

as actually calling the parent directly.

But you have to understand the context in why they are asking that question.

It's not because USCIS think everyone needs a parent blessing on marriage,

but rather, its because parent being in the know is one of the factors that

contributes to determining whether the relationship is bona fide and not a fraud.

Taiwan being a very traditional family oriented country,

should such question come up (although not very likely),

answering "no, my parent's don't know yet" could at least raise some eye brows

if not slight warning flag.

Unless you have a really really significant reason, it might be worth

just getting that taken care of before the interview...just to eliminate

one more thing to worry about.
