Hello everyone,

First time posting, but this website has been invaluable in assisting with the submission of my boyfriend and I's application for a K-1 visa. It's amazing to get all this guidance for free.

My boyfriend and I met about a year ago, officially got together as a couple the end of January, and he came to visit over here in the U.S for a week in May. I already booked a flight over to the U.K. in December for Christmas. While not officially engaged, we do want to submit a petition for a K-1 Visa to get him over here in the states.

Our only question is: does the U.S. government really care about how long a couple has been together before petitioning for a K-1? Would it be better for us to wait to submit after I go over there in December or can we just go ahead and submit it now without expecting any issues because of the length of time we've been together? Just to reiterate, this is a U.S. citizen petitioning for a U.K. citizen, if it matters.

Thanks in advance for any insight,

Jessie

No, they don't care how long a couple has been together.

Once you have filed a K1 you can definitely say you are officially engaged.

No, it won't affect it. USCIS only wants for you to meet you partner in person 2 years prior to filing the I-129F. He went to the U.S and met you in person,so you should have proof of that and now that you are going to see him twice that's just more added to the collection :)

I submitted my I-129F petition after only knowing Betty 4 months. We were only engaged about 2 weeks when I sent the petition off & that was after only having about 2 weeks of actual face time at the time. And our case was approved, so you don't have to worry about that. I will say that your planned trips will help when you get to the Interview phase for the actual K-1. But there's time till then.

No, they certainly don't care. Our approved I-129F was filed a little over 3 months after we had met in person and under 5 months since we had started talking online. We hadn't even known of each other a year before we got married, so I think you'll be just fine.

I just filed on Tuesday the 12th and am in somewhat the same position. We have known each other over a year and he has visited 4 times though and I've visited there (UK) once. We aren't officially engaged either but we also wanted to get the process started so we can be together permanently.

Best of luck to you :)

In order to file you both need to sign a letter saying you intend to marry within 90 days of entry to the US. If that is not engaged, I don't know what is. When you ask your significant other to sign that letter, how is that not asking them to marry you? What I think you mean is, you don't have a ring. That has been covered ad-nauseam (you don't need one, many people don't) elsewhere.

I would hesitate to say "While not officially engaged, we do want to submit a petition for a K-1 Visa to get him over here in the states." Some people might misinterpret that statement.

BTW - Good Luck!

Well, exactly, if you've agreed to get married especially at the end of a certain time period, then you are engaged!

It doesn't get approved overnight. Maybe you'll have a ring by the time of the interview anyway ;-)

Jessie

Just know that you have to get married within 90 days of his entry to the US on the K-1.
