uly 25, 2014 Barely a month after federal regulations for school cafeterias kicked in, states are already pushing back.

Specifically, they're fighting nutrition standards that would considerably alter one of the most sacred rituals of the American public school system: bake sales.

Twelve states have established their own policies to circumvent regulations in the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 that apply to "competitive snacks," or any foods and beverages sold to students on school grounds that are not part of the Agriculture Department's school meal programs, according to the National Association of State Boards of Education. Competitive snacks appear in vending machines, school stores, and food and beverages, including items sold at bake sales.

Georgia is the latest state to announce an exemption to the federal regulations, which became effective July 1 for thousands of public schools across the country. Its rule would allow 30 food-related fundraising days per school year that wouldn't meet the new healthy nutritional standards, which call for more healthy options and less junk food that could contribute to the nation's child-obesity problem.

The pushback is not about students' taste buds, but their wallets. Food fundraisers are a crucial source of revenue for schools, state education officials say. "Tough economic times have translated into fewer resources and these fundraisers allow our schools to raise a considerable amount of money for very worthwhile education programs," the Georgia Department of Education wrote in a recent press release. "While we are concerned about the obesity epidemic, limiting food-and-beverage fundraisers at schools and school-related events is not the solution to solving it."

There's never been a bake sale in my daughter's school. I think Obama has gotten to them early.

I hate she misses out on such fun.

How much can they earn from school bake sales? Surely not enough to justify feeding kids more junk? Or is this more of a "principle of the thing"/"we're going to scupper every single Obama initiative" argument?

When the educational establishment makes decisions based on the good of the school over the good of the kids, then surely there is something wrong with the system?

I hate it when they try to sell Gs cookies at the Kroger entrance. I don't want your stupid cookies. Leave me alone. I just want to buy some groceries. Why are they even allowed there?

Aren't school bake sales mostly for the parents anyways?

At least here, it's usually the parents that go in and buy a dozen cookies or a cake for dinner....

I wonder if this law affects field/ sports days too. I know my girl always begs for a dollar to buy a candy bar or icecream when there is one :)

Nope. My daughter has learned how to read a recipe and bake the cookies herself. Helps with her language skills and understanding of measurements.

Now that also. In fact that subject just came up on FB. A local mall near here, has stirred quite a hoppp raaa because they told a group of 10 women they could not pray in the mall. Dublin GA Mall if your interested for the google.

Some are starting to see why and the logic behind it and make sense. Here is a reply I just posted, on the very subject you speak of .

""I don't want to be pestered by anybody when I go shop, not the girl scouts selling cookies, not the Jehovah's, not the baptist selling cookies, not the Krishna's, not even the firemen doing MDA. set up a booth and I will come over and Donate or buy if i want to. I hate going in Kroger, because they always have someone twisting your arm out front. I am a generous guy, but I don't like panhandling. Call me scrooge I actually have a problem saying no.""

Waccamaw Middle raises funds for Honor Flight

Students, parents and staff at Waccamaw Middle School raised $2,500 in three weeks to donate to Honor Flight. The money will pay for six veterans to go on the area's last Honor Flight on April 16. Students at Waccamaw Middle School in Pawleys Island, S.C. did something pretty cool this spring when they baked cupcakes and cookies to sell during lunchtime to raise money so six World War II veterans could go on an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C..

The fundraising effort was a smashing success. The students raised $2,500 in just three weeks to help the six vets visit the various national memorials that venerate their sacrifices, according to the Georgetown The Washington Times.

Bake sales have been held for centuries in this country as a way to make money where there is no money for certain causes. .. Folks trying not to be a burden on the taxpayers of their home towns. The liberal elite ... know that the people simply cannot be trusted; that they are incapable of just and fair self-government; that left to their own devices, their society will be racist, sexist, homophobic, and inequitable -- and the liberal elite know how to fix things. This is great news ! I am sad that Georgia, the State of, took so @#$ing long to actually get the exemption done. I'm sorta p|ssed off they only got 30 days in the calendar - now the band moms have to compete with the choir moms and the shop moms - and who wants to see that bloodbath in Georgia ? Not me, that's for sure.

Yes, Yes, lets not forget the football Moms - but they have special dispensation on each game day anyway, right?

How about Girl Scout cookies sale?

Oh, you are so evil. [metaphorically speaking]

Why?

Girl Scout troops, historically, are not attached to any school. Different rules for marketing, as well.
