We traveled to Buffalo NY to meet her life long friend and mother, was planning to cross over and stay at their home in Canada. Canada Border refused the combo card, needed a green card with stamp. We offered certified marriage license and other proof of her living in USA but all rejected. Canada is aware of the combo card and understands its purpose but it will not use it as a proof of citizen ship.

I looked all over the net for any info and could not find anyone being turned away, well now I know.

We flew to Buffalo because of free flight and close to her friends home in Canada.

So to all who are looking for answers about whether or not you can use the combo card for crossing into Canada, the answer is NO. You need a green card.

Regards,

You still need passports or EDL to enter Canada. You need the combo card to get back.

I've checked into this. If you are a green card holder, this provides proof of domicile in the US, (permanent resident.) A combo card does not provide that proof. Once you get the green card, you're good to go to Canada. Prior to this, you have to follow your country's visa requirements, and obtain a visitor's visa to enter.

Exactly. A USA green card holder can enter Canada, before that is in possession it depends if their passport holder's country is accepted to enter without a visa. You can travel and re-enter with the combo card, but you still need to follow the visited country's rules on who can visit and if a visa is required.

I think that may be just to visit Canada though, I think other countries still go by your citizenship and hence the country that issued your passport, generally speaking the AP and eventual green card are just to get back in to the US and not get into other countries.

Canada, Mexico, and some Caribbean countries work that way.

Maybe take this question to the Canada subforum. There may be people there familiar with the process of getting a visitors visa to Canada.

They were correct in rejecting her combo card. Your wife needs to either wait until she gets her green card, or get the appropriate Canadian visitor visa. The combo card only gives her advance parole to re-enter the US. It doesn't give her the ability to enter Canada without a visa.

Green card holders can enter Canada without a visa, regardless of citizenship
