we used to use AT&T calling cards from sam's club as well, until we both got vonage. its so much easier because you don't have to worry about calling cards running out on you. plus, you can forward calls and get voicemail. we have the unlimited plan but if you think you aren't going to use up more than a few hundred minutes a month, get the smallest package (i think its like $19.99?).

I've tried AT&T card from Sam's, it worked good at first but lately it gave me tons of trouble connecting to my parents' home in Indonesia. It costs me around 19 cents per minute if I call land lines, but double than that for calling cell phones. Recently I tried onesuite.com, it only charges me 19 cents per minute for cell phone and 11 cents for land lines. It has pretty decent quality, but I've only used it for about a week, so cannot really vouch for that. Worth to try though, especially since you can buy it off of the internet for only $10 !

I have use a service called gphone (www.gphone.com) They have this service that you can register to your cell phone. You call the number from your cell phone (which I have programmed in speed dial) and it will recognize your account and you just make the call as normal. Its by far the best connection I have ever had! ( I have tried a million different cards)

The other nice thing is that you give them a credit card that they keep on file and they bill you for your calls at the end of the month. (auto debit) You can set your limit to whatever you like so it also helps in keeping your budget down. I have my limit set at $100 and its worked just fine for me. The initial limit is $50 and if you want them to increase it you have to fill out a form and fax it.

They have several other programs too!

The best rates I've found for calling the West Bank are with the International Card from AloSmart.com..... currently 450 minutes (7 1/2 hours) for $8.50. They will deduct extra minutes for shorter calls, but it's great for long conversations !

The same card was only $6.50 just two years ago... guess they figured out what a sweet deal they were giving. But even now at 1.7 cents a minute it still beats all the competition hands down.

There are also Pay-as-you-go plans (you may want to dogpile for these) such as RelianceIndiaCall (an example, which I use; this particular one is good only for calls to India); some of these may be cheaper than using/recharging cards.

I use

www.zaptel.com

It is great you can get an estimate for any countrie.

I pay 20 buxs for 900 minutes to switzerland.

But be careful with your cell even if you dial a 1800 nr. it will charge you minitues from the cell. Try calling in the free calling time like weekends or after 9pm.

or than you might be better of with a home phone.

Let me join this fray to say that I used Lingo, they are a VOIP similar to Vonage but in my opnion have far superior international plans. We used the $50 a month unlimited because it's the only unlimited plan I could find anywhere that includes Russia. The basic unlimited plan includes the UK and a bunch of other countries. They offer the first month free, local number portbability and all the same featuers you would ever want.

Now my personal part: You can also get a $25 credit if you use an existing customer as a refer. So if you decide to use them please consider using me because I get the $25 credit too! Email me for more info or look at their website lingo.com . THey have pretty sweet plans for Asia and Mexico too.

The only BIG thing I see is that international cell phones are not included in the unlimited plan.

To have a home phone and a cell phone is ridiculous amount to pay every month so we're disconnecting our home phone, we only use it for dial up internet and 1 phone call a month home to NZ.

Does anybody know the best calling cards out there to ring internationally? I've been looking online and there are SO MANY i'm totally confused now. I trust my fellow VJers more, SO here I am asking for your advice.... :help:

I have used pennytalk to call int'l it was about .99 to connect then .33/per min to morocco. I dont use a landline anymore because the charges were so expensive. I come out better using the cell and we have 3 now with nites and weekends free within the US and text msg are so cheap overseas.
