I am going to apply for my citizenship during April 2014

I was reading the instructions and have a question about submitting evidence

The evidence asked by USCIS is

1. Copy of my permanent residence card

2. Photographs

I have read other posts where they submitted other evidence like tax returns etc. May I have more information about the evidence that needs to be submitted along with N-400 form? Thanks

You read other posts? Well, did you also read the official instructions from the USCIS?

In the event that you didn't, I've posted the link here: http://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/files/form/n-400instr.pdf

Reading it will comprehensively answer your question.

I meant USCIS instructions asks for only greencard copy and photographs.

Posts from other's in the forum has a longer list of evidence being submitted not asked for by USCIS. Wonder if I really should submit evidence not asked by USCIS????

That's not all they are asking for. Here's the documents checklist on the uscis website

http://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/files/article/attachments.pdf

My Journey:

We met through a study-abroad program in Shanghai, China in August of 2009

We got engaged March of 2010

I received my K1 VISA in 6 months (June-December 2010)

We were married 04/02/2011
I received my conditional 2-year greencard (AOS) in 2.5 months with no interview (April-June 2011)

Our son was born 02/03/2013

I received my masters degree in Speech-Language Pathology 04/17/2013

I received my 10-year greencard (ROC) in 3 months with no interview (March-June 2013)

My husband returned from deployment 06/20/2013

My naturalization journey took 4 months (April-August 2014)

I became a US citizen on 08/01/2014

Received passport in 3 weeks (regular processing)

Thank you, VJ! smile.png

if you go to USCIS N-400, document Checklist you will see they ask for a little more than just Greencard copy and photographs. It says

if you are applying for naturalization on the basis of marriage to an US citizen, send the following" Evidence that your spouse is still a Citizen, Current marriage certificate, Proof of termination of all prior marriages, and Documentation referring to you and your spouse such as Bank accounts, Leases, Mortgages, or birth certificates of children, also Tax return transcript for the last 3 years

if you're applying for Citizenship based on Marriage, You can send what they ask for or if you're like me you can also send a little bit more. I don't really think it's bad to send extra evidence. Something I learned on Visa Journey is that sending a little extra is always better than Less and since my Citizenship application is based on 3 year marriage, I sent them some extra evidence.

Messybrownhair and Gen, Thank you so much for pointing me to the evidence documents checklist. I was only reading the N-400 instructions documents where they listed only two evidence documents. Kind of misleading or maybe I missed something? I will go to the website again and do a lot of ground work!

Messybrownhair and Gen, Thank you so much for pointing me to the evidence documents checklist. I was only reading the N-400 instructions documents where they listed only two evidence documents. Kind of misleading or maybe I missed something? I will go to the website again and do a lot of ground work!

innl,

Essentially, your accompanying evidence, regardless of the time statute you apply under (three years on the basis of a having valid, on-going, co-habitational marriage to a US citizen OR five years on the basis of being a Legal Permanent resident), must contain the following three items:

1) A copy of the front and back sides of your Permanent Resident Card (Green Card)

2) Two clear, recent passport-sized photographs with your full name and Alien Number (Legal Permanent Resident number on your Green Card) lightly written on the reverse of each of the two photographs in pencil

3) A cheque or money order payable to "US Department of Homeland Security" for the amount of $680

Then, if you are applying under the three year statute, you must add a fourth category of evidence (in addtion to the three items above) that establish proof of a valid, on-going, co-habitational marriage. The USCIS asks for documents such as:

4) Documents establishing proof of a valid, on-going, co-habitational marriage:

a) Joint leases/mortgages/property deeds

b) Joint tax returns

c) Joint bank account statements

d) Joint utility bills

e) Birth certificates of any children born to the union

(This is not an exhaustive list)

The USCIS gives the petitioner some discretion to decide what single document or group of documents satisfy 4) above. Because of this lack of specificity, some petitioners go overboard and flood the USCIS with evidence such as photographs, plane tickets from joint trips, life insurance policies, joint toothbrushes, used condoms, etcetera. However, the most compelling evidence the USCIS prefers are those of financial asset and liability co-mingling (with the strongest of these seeming to be joint tax returns) and of joint residential status (with the strongest of these seeming to be joint leases/mortgages/title deeds, etcetera).

Note: if your particular circumstances (such as leaving the United States for extended periods where one might consider your Residence status to be abandoned, existence of a criminal record that casts doubt on your moral character, etcetera), you will have to provide appropriate documents satisfactorily explaining the circumstances of each and these would be in addition to items 1) through 3) (or through 4) depending on your petition).

Good luck to you!

I don't think this can be said enough because our IO told us he had denied three people that day for not doing their taxes right.

You have to file as married, whether you do it jointly or separately. Head of household is an instant denial if you are filing less than five years. After five years, your marriage status is not a requirement.

Quick question

I was going to include tax returns for 2010,2011 and 2012 I dont have 2013's yet is that ok?

Or should i wait till our accountant gives me 2013's?

If it arrives before 4/15 you should be fine. I sent mine in because you never know when the USCIS will make an exception.
