We sent in the I-485 with payment for both my wife and her 14 yr old son, double the $1070 as we read people here had succeeded with as a fee. $2140.

That was rejected as incorrect, so I called USCIS and was informed the correct fee was 1070 for my wife and 635 for my stepson, total $1705.

That was rejected as incorrect. No hint if it was too high or too low, or what the correct fee might actually be.

So I called USCIS as per instructions on the reject letter. The nice lady said the correct fee for my lady and her son was actually 1070 total. I thanked her and mentioned I'd sent the 1705, as told to by the previous nice lady when I called...with a written breakdown of how much was to go for the wife (1070) and son (635). She said she wanted to check again and came back to say those amounts I sent on one check were correct, and it should be a total of 1705. I told her the package was rejected because the amount of the check was incorrect.

She said the amount was correct, and the service center must have made an error, but to be sure she would have a level II officer talk with me. That call I am waiting for now.

Hesitant to send the same check amount they rejected earlier.

I wonder what the true and correct mystery fee amount might really be? This delay may mean my wife will miss the next college semester and my son cannot get a driver permit on schedule.

GRRRRR...(insert many terrible cuss words here)

The way I read it is the filing fee for the I-485 is $985 plus a biometrics fee for all applicants over the age of 14. So that's $85 for your wife and $85 for her son. Then there is the filing fee for a child with one parent if that child is under 13 of $635. Since her son is over 14 YO, the fee should be the filing fee of $985 plus two bio fees of $85 for a total of $1155.

Good luck,

Dave

"the I-485". You're sending in two separate forms, one for your wife and one for your stepson, correct?

If the kid is 14 or over then it is the full fee of $985 + the $85 biometrics fee, my guess is at the time of filing the kid was under 14 so it should have been 1070 + 635 but now they are over 14 so it is the full amount.

Okay, yes, the instructions say that kids 14 or older pay the full amount.

You need two I-485s

and 2 fees of $1070 each

Thanks guys, here's where it stands now...I spoke to the Level II officer who took the info and then looked up the fees and told me the 2nd nice lady was correct on her 2nd guess. That I should send in the 1705 total and everything would be fine, that the Chicago office made an error in judgement in judging the check amount was in error.

So I wrote across the cover sheet his name and position and learned opinion of the amounts and adv Chitown to contact him if they needed correction in the matter. Mailed the new check with the old and now much thicker package.

Will report.

Turned out we got the packet back again and resent it with 2 applications and 2 full payment amounts, and that was ok...seems we did that amount earlier but did not make two seperate applications. Anyway, the process would be much simpler if the powers that be would give some indication of what the problems were with the submitted forms, instead of requiring guesswork and intuitive thinking on our part.

Both wife and son have had their green cards for a year now. We are running a little business, the boy is doing very well in school and is thrilled to drive 2 years earlier than his mates in Germany can.

Very expensive, frustrating and far too time-consuming process. Too bad I didn't just have them come across the Mex boarder when that came down.

One of those things to just get done and then put behind us, like a bitter pill that must be swallowed. It is very nice it's over. To those now in the paper shuffle, there will be an end to it eventually. Press on.
