My Fiance and I will be married in Lagos in January 2014. We will start working on his paperwork to come to USA, but my question is.

After ceremony can we file for visitors visa, get appointment time and him try to come with me that way back home to visit while we are processing other Visa, etc?

I'm very new at this, and this seems like it should be easy, what are your suggestions?

A married persons from Nigeria has very little chance of getting a tourist visa. Lagos is one of the toughest consulates to deal with.

But tourist visas are issued to Nigerians. Does he/she have strong ties to Nigeria?

good luck

Just concentrate on the difficult journey ahead to get the CR1. He will never be granted a tourist visa out of Nigeria.

The odds of him getting a tourist visa are about 1,000,000 to 1....he would have far stronger ties to the US than to Nigeria....it would be a waste of time and money to try and get a tourist visa,....the VOs in Lagos have heard and/or seen just about every story there is by those seeking tourist visas....

Thank you for the Replys. When can we begin the CR1 Process before we are married, or do we start it the day after we are married or what?

My fiancé told me when he was at the consulate in Lagos that there were couples there being issued visas that had just gotten married. I'd love to know how that works. But in the meantime, when can be begin the CR1 Process as I would love to have the knowledge to get him here as soon as I can.

Any assistance is appreciated.

How is he so knowledgeable about what happens at the Consulate?

He can certainly apply for a tourist visa, it is just exceptionally difficult for a Nigerian man with a USC wife to get one! How does he, however, know what happened at the consulate? Was the already there?

No, you can only begin the process once you are married. I would start reading the guides so you can bring over all the necessary documents and evidences so you can file as soon as possible

good luck

Nigerians are full of stories of what can happen at the US embassy. There are 2 classes of family based visas , K1 for fiances ( not yet married ) and they better not get married in Nigeria and CR1 which you file with proof of being married. Each takes over a year to get. There is no chance of a Nigerian married to a USC getting a visitors visa during the CR1 process unless the person have a major company in Nigeria that requires his presence

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

That and/or belongs to the elite class and I mean Senators, Governors, etc

OP, don't be discouraged, Nigerians do get visa but once you establish that immigrant intent by having a USC Spouse then the game changes and becomes much harder. Who knows you might have married into the Dangote family and this might all be a moot point- lol

One question that was asked and one that I am curios about, how come yoru Spouse is savvy about embassy at this stage? I mean you won't be at the embassy for 6 to 8 months yet.

Good luck on the process.

If he is knowledgeable about the "proceedings" that go on inside the embassy, it could be because he has been there before trying to obtain a Visa, visitor or otherwise. This would be helpful to know, as it may come into play at some point.

The CR-1 can only be filed after marriage and the K-1 requires that you have met in person. The K-1 seems to be getting processed quicker lately, but the CR-1's seem to show more commitment and therefore have a better chance of getting approved. (maybe?)...If you're going there to marry him, I would strongly suggest planning on more visits between the marriage and the interview. Nigeria likes to see a lot of face time. Getting married on the first visit, and then never seeing him again before the interview usually doesn't sit well with the CO.

Start the process as in when can you file? You can file your petition soon as you get your marriage certificate. In Nigeria you will have in hand the day you get married. And than you send all your documents, evidence, forms and payments and such to the lockbox. Do read the guides to get a good idea.

Also read in the Nigerian forums on front-loading and putting together the best petition with the best evidence you got. You are entering the most difficult embassy with high denial rate and I am sure you want an approval the first time.

Don't know what your finace' saw or heard at embassy. It could have been DV winners. But couples don't go in embassy together. Petitioners are not allowed. So not sure what he thinks he saw.

When you say just married don't know how long that is. Because like you once married than you will file and its a 8 to 16 month wait now to get approved go hjrough NVC than wait on interview so by the time of your interview you could very well be celebrating your 1st wedding anniversary.

Read the guides and get up to date what you need to submit so you don't make any errors. All the best.
