i don't believe you will have enough time. You will arrive at the Int'l terminal, go through immigration, then pick up bags, then drop off bags for the domestic flight, then shuttle to the domestic terminal. then go to your gate. If your NRT to ATL is late, then you've got a problem.

There is usually a flight that leaves ATL for PHL a little after 6pm. I would do that one. See this link for some useful info.

You will need something short of a miracle to be able to make your connection.

Here is a suggestion: consider booking the last leg of your trip - ATL-PHL - on the very last flight of the day. That will preempt any issues related to a delay in your international arrival. Once you have gone through your proceedings with immigration - and it will take you a while to get that done - you will need to collect your bags and re-check them for your domestic flight. Upon re-checking them you can ask the airline employee if there is an earlier flight you can take.

Good luck, have a safe flight and welcome to America!

It took us 10 minutes to clear passport control, but 1 hour and 10 minutes to clear customs at MSP. Then we had to get to the domestic gate and MSP is a very small airport compared to ATL. Our flight from Amsterdam and a flight from Paris arrived at the same time and there are only two lines for customs at MSP. Given that ATL is the world's busiest airport with a large number of international flights arriving, I would feel comfortable with a layover of 3+ hours or more.

Good luck,

Dave

IF you miss your flight time DO NOT PANIC. Simply go the that Airline Ticket Counter and they will RE-BOOK you on the next flight out. This has happened to me on several occassions due to many reasons and I was NEVER asked to pay anything extra. Be sure to let you Hubby / Friends in Philly the NEW TIME so they too will not Panic.

Count on not making it. But, as others have said you can rebook your flight. I would not pay to change your ticket as the change fee would be very costly. You can try to make it by telling POE officers you have a connection, and they can try and find you the shortest line. You can also try when you have to go through security again. But, since you will have to reclaim your luggage it is very unlikely you will make the connection.

For our initial POE I had a 90 minute layover in FLL going to Las Vegas. I knew we might miss the connection but decided to gamble knowing we could always stay the night in Florida... The plane was 15 minutes late getting in so our actual layover was now 75 minutes. We were in the first row of the airplane and when we went through the customs line there were no other people from other flights (no lines - we were first).

With near zero wait in line she went then went through the immigration process in about 5-10 minutes and we were out before the luggage carousel started for our flight.. Our luggage came out somewhere in the middle and we had a small wait to get it checked (they let us use the short line) then checked our baggage back in with the airline (no line at the airline)... Then came security to get back into the terminal for our next flight. This took some time but nothing too bad.. We then hit the bathroom and walked to our plane (the first stop in the terminal) and were the last in line to get on the plane with about 20 minutes before takeoff..

So even getting through the immigration process so fast we beat our luggage out and we still could have easily missed the plane with another small hiccup or two.. We did a couple of fist pumps and high fives when we saw people still in line for our plane. If you have no great alternative and you are willing to take the risk and shrug it off if you miss the flight knowing you can catch a later flight then I would go for it... Just have a plan if you miss the flight.

Yes, you can rebook the flight, but given how full flights are today, do not expect the next flight out. As OnMyWayID states, "Have a plan" for missing the flight. I was amazed at how few empty seats there were on each leg from our recent trip to Almaty. The MSP to DEN leg may have had one or two empty seats. The airlines are doing a very good job of filling those seats these days. This means that rebooking to another flight is harder to do. Just be prepared.

Good luck,

Dave

That is why I suggested booking on the last possible flight. It is always easier to get on an earlier flight than the other way around, and if push comes to shove, you're guaranteed a seat.

I have flown thru atlanta numerous times. I would never try to schedule a transfer from international to domestic in under 3 hours. If you have no checked baggage maybee. But if you have to wait for the baggage I doubt you will make it. For your and your loved ones peace of mind, I would rebook a later flight.

My rule of thumb for all of my international flights is 4 hours transfer time. I would rather wait in the United lounge or at a gate then have to run thru the airport to try to make a flight.

And ATL is a HUGE airport. If your flight is on the last concourse expect a long tram ride underground just to get you to the center of the concourse, If your gate is on one of the ends you will have 50+ gates to walk/run past to get to it.
