I can't be alone in this, right? Other members here are stressing about this too, right? sad.png

My fiance and I have spent so much time stressing about our K1 that we haven't put too much thought into the actual wedding part. Once I move to the US, we are moving into a new apt together (he is living with a roommate at the moment), so we are mostly focused on finding a place, and then the actual move. We recently had the idea of flying to Vegas and having sort of a shot-gun wedding, but then there is the stress of having to invite close family. THEN, we got the idea to fly to Florida to have a beach wedding, using one of those all inclusive wedding packages.

I will be moving there September 1st, so we need to figure all this out relatively quickly, and honestly I just feel like my head might explode.

Is anybody else sitting in the same boat? Just looking to vent/share in the stress with other VJs!

Thanks for listening guys, I really appreciate it! jest.gif

You can start making tentative plans before you arrive. Also, you usually have 6 months before the K-1 visa expires to enter the US. If you are in need of more time, then you can use that to plan things out before moving. Many people have an easier to plan smaller wedding or get married at the courthouse then have their large ceremony later.

My husband and I made tentative plans before he ever got the visa or moved here. We looked together online for invitations and things of that nature. I scouted out wedding venues, officiants and photographers. I showed him photos of the place I liked(he liked it too) and then once he entered the US, we went together to make sure that was where we wanted to hold the ceremony. We put down all the deposits and got everything together and wed in less than 2 months after he entered the US with his K-1.

I know it can seem overwhelming at times, but just wanted you to know it is possible, and you won't explode tongue.png

We are having a quicky wedding at the courthouse. Then later we will have the big ceremony / party. We decided it would just be too much to get organized in such a short time. This way we meet the letter of the law to get married within 90 days, and have time to enjoy the celebration later.

A bit off your topic. Would having a Vegas wedding cause problems later with AOS? The reason I ask, is Vegas weddings are not recognized in my state. IF we would do a Vegas wedding, we would need to do it again in my home state to make it legal here. I'm just thinking having the wedding in the state where you plan to make AOS would make things easier. Maybe it doesn't matter. Hopefully someone will chime in.

I have never heard of a wedding in Vegas not being legal in any of the states. A legal marriage in Las Vegas, NV is a legal marriage everywhere and would be recognized in all 50 states. Which state you marry in has no bearing on AOS.

Honestly have a quick wedding and then plan out a bigger one. Lots of k1 people have this issue and do just that! :) Actually if you wanted to, you could have your quick wedding then plan a destination wedding that takes place in about a year to year and a half. You won't be worried about the legalities if you choose not to use a US destination.

If 90 days is not enough time to properly plan a wedding after receiving the K-1 visa, then why rush to enter the US. Use up the validity period on the visa which is typically 6 months or so and then use up most of the 90 days to get married if need be. That is 8 to almost 9 months. You could almost attend the wedding classes required by the Catholic church before getting marriedtongue.png . The problem is that after waiting for the visa to be issued everybody rushes to come to the US to be with their fiancé(e). If a big wedding is an issue than I am thinking people should use the spousal visa so they can get married when they want and then apply for the visa. IMHO all of this needs to be thought about before applying for any visa. As others have said, most K-1 visa holders come to the US and get married in the courthouse to satisfy the 90 day requirement and then plan a bigger wedding for later. My vote would be at the first anniversary as that would give you a full year to plan for a wedding.

Good luck,

Dave

I did the same as Jay-Kay. Made plans, scouted things and finalised it all once I arrived in the US.

Sure it's stressful, weddings ALWAYS are. Many K1's choose to do a court wedding and then a big celebration.

After all the visa hoops and waiting, the actual wedding will be a snap for us.

Actually our wedding took about 2 months to plan. Not even considering that many things were decided on the week before when we finally arrived in BC. We didn't have a big reception and had about 20 guests. I had hoped for some of his family to come but his best friend couldn't get leave (Air Force), his mom can't travel and his brother not only couldn't get leave (Navy) but couldn't afford it since he has a wife who doesn't work and 3 kids. Such is life.
