I think you should discuss finances with her, since she seems to think you have a lot more money than you actually do, which will lead to problems later when she wants the expensive clothes and you're stuck with credit card bills.

It does sound like you might need to get to know her or her expectations a bit more. If your application is sent to VSC, you'll have plenty of time for that.

Seriously, we are planning essentially the same as everyone else here. Once my fiance has his approved visa, I'll fly over and we'll have a blessing/ceremony (that isn't legal) for his family and friends. Then, we'll fly together here and do a civil ceremony. Next year we'll plan a big to-do for all to come and celebrate.

So my fiancee from Russia wants the elaborate wedding. We only have 3 months to plan for it once she is here. Right now she will be in the interview process next month. This is why we can't make any real plans until she gets that K1 visa. It doesn't make sense to plan a wedding and make deposits until the visa is in her hands.

She wants her family and best friend to attend the wedding. I said fat chance with that. I'm not flying all those people and boarding them on my dime. Not to mention, how in the world are they going to get a visa that quick? So the K1 visa has a few flaws. One of which is... you have three months to get married. I think they should be realistic that this should be longer. You have a better idea how a person is like if you lived with them for at least a year. You can't plan a real wedding with just 3 months. I wish they made it 1 year grace period to marry.

Would like to hear all your experience with this situation

If relatives and friends can get visas for themselves and pay for their own flights then why not welcome them? I am sure she dont expect that burden to be on you. It seems like a bunch of people trying to come to the U.S. on false pretenses. I hope she dont mess it up for herself.

I agree with everyone that you should get the "legal" portion over with and, if you can both agree on a budget and lavish wedding, do it soon after. Remember....girls start planning their weddings at age 5 so this is a big deal for her. Maybe once she is actually living with you and has adjusted to her new life, all that seemed so important before won't be so important after all.

Our Journey:

10/02/2011: Met while working in Afghanistan

09/20/2012: NOA2 notice
10/05/2012: Attorney Received Case number from NVC
10/25/2012: Received packet 3 ( the same time I left on my flight back to the US)
11/06/2012: Medical Scheduled

I don't agree in extending the time for the wedding, especially if it's because you need to get to know the person.

IMHO, shouldn't really get engaged if you don't know the person.

My fiancée and I planned the wedding well in advance, giving USCIS/consulate plenty of time. Had they taken their time our wedding would have been the actual wedding. Since things moved a little bit faster than we expected, we got officially married in the 90 days from arrival (with a celebratory dinner with a few family members) and now are finishing planning for the upcoming wedding. If you want a well planned real wedding, you probably need to compromise on a few things.

As for paying for the relatives to come over, sounds a little bit too much.

Tell her that in America the bride's family traditionally pays for the wedding, that way it stays out of your pocket.

Otherwise, hit the JOP for a legal wedding and fly back to Russia once she has her AP and let her have her elaborate one.

I took the risk and planned the wedding after sending my petition. I planned in advance and calculated how long it should take for him to get the interview and actually be here.. The place where I booked was also aware of my situation and were willing to be flexible if needed.. I only gave a $1,500 deposit and luckily my next deposit was due after the interview in where we already found out he was approved.. Immediately as I came back, I made another large deposit of 3,500.00 and continued to pay off the place monthly for 3 months. We got married right before the 90 day mark! His sister also applied for a tourist visa and was able to attend the wedding, his other sister was denied (I sent them a wedding invitation with a letter requesting the presence at our wedding.)

and at my interview they actually asked me what our wedding plans were, and I was able to show her the contract of the location which was a plus!
