This is the AOS forum, so hopefully a mod will move your post to the correct forum so you can get the best answers possible to your question.

Didn't she get an I-551 stamp in her passport when she entered? She can use that for work and everything else. It acts the same as a green card. If she doesn't have her SSN yet, then go to the SSA and inquire about it. They may be able to give you the # while waiting for the card to arrive.

Moved from the AOS forum to the CR-1/IR-1 forum discussion as a more appropriate location for this question.

Moderator hat off . . .

Yes, the I-551 stamp they placed in her passport at the POE (even if it was Toronto) is proof of her legal right to live and work in the US. She just needs to bring the passport and advise her interviewer that the green card is on its way. She can also apply in person for her SSN at the SSA instead of waiting for the card. At least she can see if it has been issued yet.

Good luck to her on her interview.

How is Toronto considered a POE for United States when its in Canada..that doesnt even make sense.

There seems to be a fair amount of variation with how quicly (or slowly) people get the GC after POE.

I got mine a week after entry, and yet another VJ friend that entered the same day didn't get hers for nearly a month. But she had her SSN before I did - mine was never issued so I had to go in and apply for it myself.

Like the others have said, the stamp in the passport acts as the GC until she actually gets the card. I'm sure the interviewer will understand why she doesn't yet have her GC and SSN - she's only been here a few weeks.

Good luck to her for the interview!!

Yes, the I-551 stamp they placed in her passport

Like the others have said, the stamp in the passport acts as the GC

OP, at the bottom of the visa, there should be the annotation "upon endorsement acts as temporary I-551 valid for one year." The 'endorsement' is a standard CBP admission stamp on the page next to the visa (CBP is no longer placing special I-551 stamps in passports, instead it is the combination of the visa and admission stamp on the page next to the visa that acts as the temporary GC). As Jay-Kay and Kathryn have suggested, she should bring her passport to places where she needs to show that she is an LPR.

How is Toronto considered a POE for United States when its in Canada..that doesnt even make sense.

CBP operates a preclearance facility at the airport in Toronto. Here is where you can read about US Border Preclearance; and here is where you can see a list of CBP preclearance locations.

Many countries have pre-clearance for going through immigration. When flying from the Toronto airport to Milwaukee (or Dublin Ireland to Chicago is another example) you go through immigration and customs in the departing city. With Toronto this is great becuase that allows flights to leave to airports in the US that may not be true international airports with an immigration and customs area.

i wouldn't sweat about the greencard for the nonce,

but instead focus on getting the ssn from the local ssa office.

go in person, fill out the SSA-5 application, then when you had it to the clerk,

ask the clerk to look you up via VISA name in the SAVE database. Not found? ask for lookup via VISA number. CBP might have done a typo into the SAVE system, so have the clerk look both ways.

When she's found and the application accepted, come back the next day, and get the SSN (number only).

If you study the I-9 document, you'll get a better understanding of 'what she needs' for working - she's got half of it already from the stamp at the POE.

In a few days though, call USCIS, get a Tier 2 human, and recheck the address that they have on you.

Good Luck !

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Review the I9 as stated before... Looks like the I551 is all that is required.

http://www.uscis.gov/files/form/i-9.pdf

also review.

She should be able to be offered a job and pass I-9 doc validation w/out a ssn.

Re: Toronto and many other cities outside the USA being POE. http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/toolbox/contacts/preclear_locations.xml

Fast turnaround on SS cards is two weeks. Fast for green cards is three weeks. Give them both 30 days. The endorsement of the visa upon entry is a temporary green card for a year.

Three weeks from entry date is about as fast as I've seen a green card arrive. Four to six weeks is a proper expectation. I have no idea where you got the idea it would be any faster than that, but it simply isn't.
