So now Alla can vote and she has been forming opions of political issues for some time. She generally thinks ALL politicians are crooks and liars and couldn't care less about the people and thinks that the USA is no different in that regard than the FSU.

On issues...

She is pro-choice on abortion, very pro-gun, couldn't care less about gays and is fine with them getting married or WTFever they want to do, thinks women are completely different than men but should have the same rights, in favor of national healthcare but not Obamacare which she thinks is crazy. Her opinion, just have something like medicare for everyone. (Single payor) thinks global warming may be real but not sure it is a bad thing or that it is man made, She doesn't like Romney MORE than she doesn't like Obama. She may not vote at all.

Thinks the Secret Service prostitution scandal is stupid (What does anyone think men do?)thinks Zimmerman needs to be tried and either punished or released depending what the jury says. Thinks marijuana should be legal. She is frugal and responsible, has strong community sense of responsibility, she volunteers 4 hours per week at the hospital because they saved my life and she "owes" them. she had volunteered when she first arrived, stopped doing it and now is doing it again ) She serves on a local school board committee and volunteers for "work days" at the gun club.

Some others...she is not religious, is probably more Democrat or even Socialist than Republican, but has strong beliefs about or rights and thinks they should be left alone...ALL of them. She does not care much for porn, for example, but does not want it banned. Thinks adults can eat what they want, smoke what they want and drink waht they want. As for immigration, she understands why illegals come here and says she would "do the same" if she had to. She thinks USCIS does a good job but they are slow because they are not up to date. She thinks it could be done faster.

FSU spouse politics. What is yours like? was the question. What a bummer that Alla can vote in the next presidential election, but would have to decide who sucks more, and vote for the one who doesn't suck as much. My wife is Colombian, so I don't really have any business answering here, but her ex is from FSU, so maybe that will get me in.

Was there a question Gary? Seems to me she sounds liberal perhaps a liberal republican but leaning more Dem. Most of her views are liberal I think.

Frank

The question was...what are your FSU spouse's politics like? Have they developed any thoughts and ideas? I then mentioned some of my wife's thoughts and ideas. What about your spouse? What does she think about it? Or does she? Does she agree with you on things or differ. Alla and I agree on most things but not all. I do not want federal healthcare for example, she does. I think we should have strong laws about illegal immigrants and using them to avoid our employment laws, she does not think about it so much. She liked the idea of trading Mexico one lazy American protestor for each hard working Mexican. :P

This sounds like a libertarian... I wish there was a libertarian party in the U.S. that actually mattered. Combining democrats' social freedom (pro-choice abortionism, legalization of pot, secularism, gay couples, etc.) with republicans' economical freedom (less taxation, free market, etc.) is the way to go. A party like that with significant social support emerged just recently in Poland, so they got my vote.

Cheers!

Sounds like the rest of the country, definitely not a liberal democrat, this country is not liberal, and how did we end up with what we have now? Nanny state only works when everybody works, as soon as you have too many people wanting something for nothing it fails. Example GREECE

Says who? I am from Greece, and this stupid idea that gets portrayed by the media about Greece (that we want something for nothing) is getting old. Live there first, get your facts straight and then come talk to us about Greece

In regards to US politics my wife is indifferent. She watches local and world news on the tube every day after work, but if it came down to her knowing who's running for US president vs who stars in Sex in the City...Sex in the City would win out.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

1. My wife has no interest in US politics but then again she has/had no interest in UA politics. She believes all politicians are crooks in every country.

2. She had the exact reaction, and almost word for word answer concerning the secret service that Alla had.

3. She is terrified of the way we dole out health care in this country. I'm sure she would be in favor of a single payer system.

4. She believes communism doesn't work but isn't all that impressed with capitalism either ... except the shoe selection ... "it's much better than the USSR" tongue.gif (quote without "the" of course, "it's a stupid word and who needs it!" laughing.gif)

There is nothing wrong about a man who is proud of his wife.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

In general Alla is/was the same, but as of the last few months she has be asking more about issues. Many she does not understand WHY they are an issue. For example, abortion. She asks "isn't abortion legal?" Yes. "But this candidate wants to change it and make it illegal?" Yes, but he can't. "Why?" Because the Supreme Court said it was a woman's right. "So why is it an issue, why are we talking about it?"

She started doing our bills a few months ago and she says she enjoys it and has done a great job. She is far more organized than I about such things. She also is a person to track everything and understand exactly what is happening. I think if I leave a light bulb on an extra 15 minues this month, she will ask me about it next month. So we are discussing medical care and she says that, in total between medical inusrance and the deductibles and co-pays for my medication and routine care (I am NOT a cheap date) we pay AS MUCH, and some months MORE than we pay for our house, AND utilities minus phone.

"You realize we should have TWO houses, one in a warm place for winter, for what we pay for medical care? More than HALF our income goes to pay for our house and our medical care, things we HAVE to pay for. How can a country survive if HALF of each family's income is just for a house and medicine? Add in food and there is not a lot left to buy other things" And that is AFTER tax!

She has a point there. Vermont's single payor program will be an 11% tax, 1/2 employer, 1/2 employee and she can't wait. I know some people do not pay as much and do not have medications to take every day, but even the insurance alone is a good chunk of change.

Some of her ideas are too radical for me...paid leave for mothers for 2 years! Fine in the Soviet Union but will never fly where most people are employed in private, for profit, business. Paid education through a masters degree? I guess I would like to see it be more economical to attend college, even free, but not necessarily through a Master's degree.

I thought it might be interesting since our wives come from diametrically opposed political cultures, though as Alla says "They tried to wash my brain, but it did not work. I have a dirty mind" :P

Re: number 3. About 4 weeks after arriving Alla had a kidney stone. She went to the ER, was treated very well, the stone passed ansd everything was OK. She was amazed at the hospital (where she now works many hours per week) and thought we had the best medical care she had ever seen. Then the "bill" came and she was ready to move back to Ukraine, saying "we cannot afford to live here!" She was ashamed she had inflicted this horrible expense on the family! It was the statement that says what had been billed to our insurance. We had been married right away and she was added to my insurance on October 1. The bill to US was -0-.

Alla agrees with her about clothes and shoes!

Alla refers to it as "Soviet Union" or "SSSR", I have never heard her say "USSR" Does Tanya? Just curious. The name of our street in Donetsk translates to "50 Years SSSR" and was renamed in 1972 for the big celebration. It has not been changed back. Odd, since they went to huge effort to remove all the sewer covers with the hammer and sickle and replace them with new ones with the Ukrainian symbol.
