... Sometimes I find myself daydreaming of my fiancee and I being who we are, but just forty years ago... I imagine it was much easier to marry & immigrate back then. Plus, I'd be wearing some swanky polyester clothing. Just trying to distract myself while I wait for the Consulate to contact me. It's a nice daydream. praying for all who wait tonight!

I can tell you that 31 years ago it was NOTHING like what it is now...I really do not remember much of it, as it was the late 70's early 80's and in SoCal....so there were some other activities that kept my mind busy, ahah, but I can assure you the process was nothing like this nor a fraction as long.

However, my fiance is worth all the time and effort and cost involved in the current process...even though it sucks. haha

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

I(from the foreign country) have relatives in California, my grandmother's sister is the "original" Dane. She immigrated about 60 years ago, still visits Denmark every other year. This summer she visited and told me about her process back then. I was baffled by the lack of papers and security. But I guess everything has its price. Telling her about the K1 procedure she - as the 78 year old she is - twitched her face into something like this

Good luck with your upcoming interview :)

K1 process, October 2010 > POE, July 2011

I-129F approved in 180 days from NOA1 date. (195 days from filing to NOA2 in hand)

Interview took 224 days from I-129F NOA1 date. (241 days from filing petition until visa in hand)

From filing I-129F petition until POE: 285 days

Click timeline or "about me" for all details.

AOS process, December 2011 > July 2012

EAD/AP Approval took 51 days from NOA1 date to email update. (77 days from filing until EAD/AP in hand)

AOS Approval took 206 days from NOA1 date to email update. (231 days from filing until greencard in hand)

From filing I-129F petition until greencard in hand: 655 days

Blame the same device that made it possible for most of you to meet your SOs. The internet.

The increase in people meeting online has fueled the increase in petitions which has extended the delays. So the very thing that may have made your journey possible is also causing it to be much slower.

Ironic, yes?

It is, but I can't take personal blame for that one. We both signed up for a summer volunteer trip through a Christian organization at our respective universities. :)

My great-grandma came over the border from Ontario to Buffalo and just stayed (this would have been in the 1920's). They would visit her family in Brant a lot too, so it's not like she never went back and forth.

It's strange my entire life Ontario has always been like the next county over and now you need a passport (or enhanced license) to go over.

Anyway, hope everything goes quickly for you! Best of luck :)

Me neither, we met by chance and it was not even in Ukraine!

Heck, just reading here and seeing the differences in the timelines on older threads or on the signatures of folks that have been here at VJ for a few years makes me jealous.

It doesn't help that I hear this from every direction: "Why are you waiting? Just do it illegal like my cousin/aunt/husband/etc. Obama is gonna make it all okay real soon. Doncha know about the Dream Act?" (I live on the coast of Texas.)

Sigh.

Same world, just a different quality of film.

Seriously, if we all take a look at it 10 years from now we will see a different picture all together I think. The rate of change for everything seems exponential now.

Ah, but 40 years ago it would've also been more expensive and difficult to visit family back home. I'm rather enjoying the current age of cheap, accessible flights.
