Wording I am even guilty of that I don't like is the saying 'have been' instead of 'was'.

Nothing wrong with it -- it's the present perfect progressive tense, as opposed to the simple past tense. It all depends on whether or not the action is fully in the past or not.

I know it, right! It's so simple.

Nothing wrong with it -- it's the present perfect progressive tense , as opposed to the simple past tense. It all depends on whether or not the action is fully in the past or not.

I am sure I must have learned all of this at some point, but I sure don't remember it.

This could be correct, technically, depending on context. Is the speaker/writer speaking/writing about losing or suffering a deficiency in his sense of touch?

Most people know this pet peeve of mine... when people shorten "etcetera" to "ect" instead of "etc". i could understand it if ect occured anywhere in the word but it doesn't...

Of course everyone hates:

- they're

- there

- their

- your

- you're

Oh, also when people don't use "an" or "a" correctly before a word starting with a vowel. Such as "I had a accident" is wrong, "I had an accident" is correct.

I'm sure there's more but I'm trying really hard to be less rigid. I can ignore most but the "ect" thing makes my eye tick :S

One of my favorite sayings in Ebonics (overheard) remains: "I axxin' you: is you gonna did it?" Ecsettera, ect.

Also interesting, and logical upon thinking about it, is the difference between "I livin' in town" vs. "I be livin' in town." The first implies a more temporary residential status; the second, more permanence, si man.

In traditional spoken English, it grates on me to hear "pee-AN-ist" vs. "PEE-an-ist."

Definition for the Day: Peon, n. - someone you pee on, si man (or should that be "someone upon whom one pees, pee man"?).

Hmmmm....I hate it when people say they're "fixin" to do something

Well, that's an extremely common regional synonym for "preparing" or "intending." It isn't so bad (and one can see the connection in my first sentence) in the sentence "I'm fixin' dinner." Now, "I'm fixin' to make dinner" is redundant if the sense is "preparing," but not so much if the sense is "intending."

(I'm fixin' to become confused very soonly, si man.)
