Hello everyone. I have a concern regarding my English test. I have been practicing my civic test and believe that I have it down. But what frightens me is the writing test. I speak and read English with no problem, but when it comes to writing you might as well give up on me. I have really bad dyslexia and when I get insecure or nervose I really can't concentrate enough to get the words together in my head. I been practicing the words on the back page but still I misspell a few of them. I was wondering if anyone has the same problem and how strict they are going to be with the spelling. It worries me quite a bit and I feel sort of stupid not to be able to spell most stuff right.

don't worry, it's only one sentence. Lately, it has to do with the civil test, the words are there to review. You read the sentence. Then the officer gives you the answer and you write it. there's no problem if there is a word or two mispelled.

My question was: How many Senators do we have?

I wrote: We have 100 Senators. That's it.

you have good English, look at all you wrote above. Perfect!

I can't say how strict they'll be on the test but I hope it makes you feel better to know that many native English speakers have trouble spelling. You certainly are not alone!

I was trying to edit my post but for some reason the ability to do so went away...

I just wanted to second the other poster in that your English is good. I saw one thing spelled incorrectly which makes your spelling better than most!

You'll be fine. Good luck!

If you practiced, then it will be fine. Take your time, and you can also mention to the IO that you are dyslexic, so you would like to write a little slower and not because you don't know what you are writing... they are understanding and will accommodate your request!

Good luck!!

Scooby06-If you can write/type your VJ post message....Then you can pass the citizenship English test...;)

Basically, the English test is to read a simple sentence and to write a simple sentence...

For example, when I had my test, one of my sentences was...(or something along the lines of...)

"The White House is in Washington D.C."...

If you can write a simple sentence like this, then you can pass....;)

As well, they give you up to three sentence to write/read, so if you don't get the first one right, then there are two more opportunities to get one correct to pass the test. You only need one correct to pass.

And yes, do tell the IO about your dyslexia, and I'm sure they can accomodate for such too.

Don't let your disability get in the way! Remember...Disability=Ability.....

Also, keep on studying and practicing....

Hope this helps.

Good luck with your test and interview and good luck on your citizenship journey too.

I am a dyslexic, one trick is to look at the word backwards quickly. Many times if you spelled it backwards you can spot it when you look at it right to left vs left to right. Try it before hand to see if it helps. This is something I have done since I was a child ( where spelling counts, sometimes I just let it stay however it comes outs )

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

Unless someone wrote this thread for you, you have no problem. There are a lot of people who passed the test and could not write a quarter of what you wrote. Do not lose sleep over this. Your English is more than o.k for this test. Good luck.

like everyone said OP...you have nothing to worry about. the main thing of the written test is to verify that you CAN write in the english language. it seems different for everyone...but when i went for my interview and asked to write a sentence...the IO showed me a piece of paper, pointed to a sentence, and told me to copy it and that was it!

but yeah...just let the IO officer know regarding your situation. they're surprisingly easy to communicate with when you're in their office.

Did you mean to put 'urself' or is it text language ?

I think a lot of people who appear dyslexic are just usuing text language that they have become used to. For non-native English speakers, I think texting is bound to lead to bad English becoming embedded as normal.
