The vote on these critical amendments is scheduled for today at approximately 10:00 a.m.

Senate Scheduled to Vote on Border Security Amendments Today!

The Senate is currently considering H.R. 4899, the Emergency Supplemental Appropriations bill. True immigration reformers in the Senate recognize that the increasing violence and illegal immigration on the U.S.-Mexico border is a serious situation that must be addressed. Despite this, President Obama cut funding to many of the law enforcement agencies tasked with combating drug violence and trafficking, and ensuring border security.

For over a year, lawmakers have been calling on the president to deploy National Guard troops to the border. Obama finally responded this week with the announcement that he would send 1,200 troops, but as Senators Kyl and McCain responded, this “is a weak start and does not demonstrate an understanding of the current situation in the region.” Senator Cornyn stated that “The President must make border security a priority, not an afterthought or an empty talking point.”

True immigration reformers in the Senate have offered the following amendments that will be voted on today:

  • Senator McCain and 10 cosponsors have offered Senate Amendment 4214, which would provide for 6,000 National Guard troops to support and secure the southern land border of the United States.
  • Senators Kyl and McCain have offered Senate Amendment 4288, which would appropriate $200 million for a law enforcement initiative to address illegal crossings of the Southwest border.
  • Senator Cornyn and 3 cosponsors have offered Senate Amendment 4202, which provides resources for federal, state, and local law enforcement officers who work on the frontlines of the U.S.-Mexico border every day. More specifically, Senator Cornyn’s amendment will fund six important priorities involving border security, which include border security and technology, state and local law enforcement, southwest border taskforces, border enforcement personnel, detention and removal activities, and ports of entry.

Together we can show Congress what the American people truly want when it comes to immigration reform. Please act now to make sure that these critical border security amendments pass in the Senate today!

I've always wondered about cheap Infrared towers every 4 miles, 1 mile from the border, for a total of about 500. The network alerts a rapid response team of say 6 people stationed ever 20 miles to respond to movements across the border. 600 hundred people could literally control the border in this way. (Urban areas excluded).

That's asking too much of Obama.... or Bush

We could have listening devices for digging. Sound travels quite a distance underground.

Exactly! Why do so many people try to figure out how the Mexico--USA border could be secured? It's so simple, a caveman can do it! The Chinese built a 3000-mile long wall; the Russians effectively sealed the Iron Curtain, and even somebody as dumb as I am could easily make the border inpenetrable with just a couple Billon dollars.

Forty-two years ago we already landed on the Moon, but cannot build a fence? Are you kidding me?

But the US Government and also the Mexican Government do not want to do that! It's politics! Plain, simple, and yet apparently not as obvious to some as it should be.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

It must truly suck, having opinions based on gut level 'feelings' and political sour grapes, but not really having facts. Here are some facts for the "Obama and the Democrats are soft on illegals" crowd:

Deportations Up Under Obama

Posted on: May 27, 2010 9:09 AM, by Ed Brayton

Despite constant cries from conservatives about Obama's alleged (and mythical) unwillingness to enforce the immigration laws, ThinkProgress points out that the number of people deported has gone up -- way up -- under Obama.

Each year, under President Bush, the number of deportations more than tripled. Much to the dismay of immigration advocates who thought that Morton was only going to go after the "worst of the worst," the Obama administration has maintained this upward trend. During fiscal year 2009, 100,000 more immigrants were deported than during the last full fiscal year of the Bush presidency.

And here's a chart that shows that the goal is even higher for 2010:

Fabulous.

Now go and read what most here want to happen. Take away the incentive to come here and remain here. Take on the employers and make it financially untenable for them to employ illegal immigrants. Cut off the demand to choke the supply.

Show some statistics that prove this is more than a token effort to show that something is being done about the situation. Show that this administration is doing more than BushBaby, more than Clinton, more than BushPapa and more than Reagan post-'85. Show that businesses and employers are being targeted successfully and in numbers that will make a dent in the situation. Because treating the symptoms is useless, if the root cause of the problem is not addressed.

Enforce the laws we have and kick amnesty/reform to the curb.

Don't interrupt me when I'm talking to myself

Bravo & three thumbs up for this post, si man!

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).
