A Plea to Long Time, Level-Headed Members Who Still Post Here

We need more of you to participate in the Off Topic Forum. For those who are level-headed, you know who you are and you've probably avoided OT because of the handful of posters who've made it less enjoyable to have reasonable discussions about a lot of topics that deserve some serious thought. Of course, not every thread needs to be serious, but I think the ones here who've been long time members and are still here, are staying in the upper forums where there is less tolerance for playground behavior.

I would venture in OT more but I find my tolerance for rampant ignorance, sexism, racism, and general f^cktardedness has dropped in my dotage. Every other thread seems to be "I Hate Brown People" which as a half-brown person myself I find a bit of a turn off.

Sorry to hear that.

I know that it has become quite hostile lately, but I believe that if enough, level-headed, longtime members stood up to the bigotry and reported those who blatantly violate the TOS, the Off Topic can once again be a place where people can actually have meaningful, level-headed discussions.

I suppose in a way, yes, but I'm being sincere in that OT has been overrun by a handful of people who turn every potentially meaningful discussion into a flame war.

I would love to see that day. OT is even more of a cesspool than when I joined over three years ago. Now it's like wandering into a room of 13 year old boys, all participating in various iterations of "Yr dum" "no u r". The only way to improve the calibre of general talk on VJ would be, I'm afraid, to administer a battery of intelligence, personality and douchebaggery tests to weed out the undesirables.

You may not be "long time", Darnell, but you are level headed (and more than occasionally funny as f^ck).

I also find that you don't find many women (with the very notable exception of Madame Cleo) taking part in many of the potentially interesting or provocative discussions. I'm not saying that a massive influx of female contributors would necessarily raise the tenor of the conversation; no, not at all. I just find it worthy of comment.

This wasn't posted in OT, Charles, so you're acting like a troll in what was a serious topic. You are, however, providing a good example of why so many level-headed members don't bother to post anymore. Like I said earlier, there are plenty of light-hearted threads for ribbing each other, but what I'm saying is that when that bleeds into the more serious topics, it chases away people who would otherwise get involved. An example would be what happened with that "experiment" that has since become a ghost town as nobody posts there anymore.
