Can someone tell me if my fiancee needs to already have his passport, before going to the NO2 interview or is this something that he can receive the same time that he receives his K-1 Visa?

Wow, there is some serious confusion here.

You send I-129F, G-325As, $455, proof of having met, etc...

You receive NOA1.

2-5 months later You will have your I-129F approved - That is NOA2, you will be sent NOA2 as approval.

Then your fiance(e) ia allowed to apply for the K-1 visa at his/her Embassy/Consulate which is where they need to interview. You fiance(e) needs his/her passport long before you plan to file for the Visa at the Embassy/Consulate which is after you have received NOA2 in the mail.

There is no interview in the NOA2. Please go over the guides and flowchart to studdy the steps in the process.

He must have the Visa to fill out the Forms DS-156 and make application at the Embassy.

Your fiance needs to have a passport for his K-1 interview. A passport valid for 6 months beyond the interview date (hopefully visa issue date) is one of the checklist items provided by the embassy to the K-1 applicant, when your case eventually makes it there.

NOA2 is the notice that the I-129F petition has been approved and he can then apply for the K-1 through the embassy.

Check the timelines to see if the passport processing time in Costa Rica works with recent K-1ers experience in Costa Rica.

Perhaps some of the folks with Costa Rican fiance(e)s can clarify with specifics for Costa Rica.

Good Luck with your application!

Yep, right! Forgot to mention that. No NOA2 interview. Just try this link: http://www.visajourney.com/content/k1guide

And you'll probably have more questions about it, so check out the K1 Visa FAQ: http://www.visajourney.com/faq/k1faq.htm

Sorry, my first answer was too brief.

Sorry, I meant he/she must have the passport to fill out the Visa application form DS-156 and eventually receive the K-1 Visa in the passport.

The other answers pretty much covered it. One final detail you should note is that your fiancee is going to be interviewing at a US embassy or consulate. He cannot get a passport there unless he's a US citizen, in which case he wouldn't need a visa. He'll need to obtain a passport from the Costa Rica government.

Many of us had no immigration experience and many had little international travel experience before becoming engaged or married to foreigners. The question indicates such lack of experience as well as some confusion. Passports are issued by the country of citizenship and visas are affixed to passports. A K1 visa holder is more than three years from any potential of being a US Citizen or having a US passport.

Costa Rica will issue a passport BEFORE any actual application for a visa is filed but no passport is needed at the time of petition filing. The passport is not needed until after the petition is approved but getting it a comfortable amount of time in advance of the interview is a very good idea.

I thought having a pic of the beneficiary's passport for the I-129F petition package was a requirement but I checked the guide and found it wasn't.

My wife provided copies of her current and past passport in our petition package as well as her birth certificate.

If a birth certificate is not available, a passport photocopy must be provided.

As stated above, for the K-1 interview a passport should have been applied for and obtained well in advance,

as the visa goes INSIDE the passport once it has been approved.

If you're talking about the benficiary, then no - this is not correct. No identification documents from the beneficiary are required in the petition package. Those things will be submitted at the consulate.

But you will need a "passport" style photograph to include with each G325A ;)

Thanks everyone for the responses. This is however my first time for applying for any type of Visa and this whole process is somewhat confusing. I wasn't really sure where the interview was going to take place at, and thought that it might have been a Costa Rican agency, but after reviewing the items in the K1 Visa guide again, I now realize that it is at the US Embassy in Costa Rica and this wouldn't be a place that we would be able to get my fiance's passport. So we have found the place where to apply for the passport and are working to get that taken care of. Fortunately for us, it only takes 8 days to have a passport issued in Costa Rica. Anyway, we just got our NOA2 approved today and will have our passport shortly. Woo Hoo!!!
