Don't read much fiction these days.

But I really enjoyed Philippe Bourgois' (of In Search of Respect -- selling crack fame) new book Righteous Dopefiends. Gives a fascinating perspective on the "intentionally homeless." Yay, anthropology.

Just finished Crime and Punishment (Dostoevsky) and am now reading Master and Margarita (Bulgakov).

Comes with the territory, I guess.

I just finished the Stieg Larsson's trilogy (Girl With the Dragon Tattoo...) - it was real good - mystery books.

Now, I'm reading A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry, and, so far, it's also captivating. The only thing is that it makes me hungry for Indian food

I've read "A Tree Grows In Brooklyn" by Betty Smith a couple of times. Really a great classic.

I love medieval mysteries, my favourite authors are Bernard Knight (his "Crowner John" series) and Paul Dogherty (his "Templar" series).

Do they ever have death/violence in them?

Sort of. Most of them are murder mysteries, but the murder occurs before the story starts- ie there is talk about it, rather than a graphic description of the violence.
