it says in the article that the dad is not relying on the money.. I am sure it is more about the gesture for the father not the money...

Right, a meaningless feel-good gesture that has the result of producing a toy-less child who can't have fun anymore without anything to actually show for the sacrifice.

Why cant he has fun anymore? There are other ways to have fun without toys. Be imaginative and you can even make toys... he might even like to read books

I'd think the dad problably take the money and put in for the child's future fund.. that's what I'd do anyway.

'The Lord is teaching me to swallow my pride' ...

/resisting urge to tell a charlesque sexual joke....

you're not doing a very good job by alluding to it ;)

Where's Steven? I want him to tell me whether or not he'd allow his kid to sell his toys. His refusal to answer is leading me to believe he might!

I'm scarfing down a meatball marinara from subway right now so I can't type much....just shake my head at all you.

And yes...if my 11 yr. old boy wanted to sell his toys to help the family out, I would tell him first that he didn't have to, but if he insisted then I would allow it. It's a powerful lesson for the boy. That father has instilled in his boy some good values, IMO.

I'm off to go to a charity meeting now. Where I plan on finding ways to guilt small children into selling their toys.

You think it's right to re-inforce feel good do nothing sacrifices? Where does this end as well? Has the kid forfeited the right to a nice toy until the dad has paid off all his debts? It just does not make sense, no matter what way you slice it. The sacrifice of the child is stupid, no matter what the motivation for it is. It is not a lesson I would teach my kid. He would learn that if a sacrifice has meaning, then it's worth doing, but an empty gesture? Not on your life.

It would be pointless to let the kid sell his toys if you have no intention of using the money for the purpose that the kid intended.

I mean you surely know that the kids toys aren't exactly likely to help, and you would surely have to be utterly destitute if you had to rely on that. Of course the bailiffs would probably take the stuff way before that point....

oh wow! when this girl that sits next to me in my class told me about this last week she said the parents didn't want the kid to sell his toys, but he was doing it anyways. now the parents are just f*cked up. the dad just wants all this media attention so people feel sorry for the kid cos he's selling all his toys and then they can just wait for the money to pour in.

Good God, MC. If you can't see the value in it then what more can I say? You have an incredibly cynical view about sentimentality.

I really dislike the premise behind this story as well. Look at this kid, isn't he unusual in today's society? What a cynical manipulation of the reality. Maybe the kid is special, I don't know, but not for selling his toys, bleh, humbug.

Whatever happened to shielding kids from the bullsh!t of the world?

Lisa, when you were 11 yrs. old, if your father lost his job, do you think you would have been keen enough to realize that money would be tight for the family, or would you be asking your Dad for a pony?

I am amazed that all of you think that the money generated from toy sales are useless.

From what I've seen in the video, kid has lots of decent looking toys. So may be he will make $4 for one toy truck or a car. May be he will total $500 for everything he has to sell, and I think it is a moderate estimate.

Are you aware that a family can have FOOD for a MONTH with this money?

This is not about paying off the debt (file for bankruptcy or sue the guy who did not pay the father for the job done).

This is not about paying bills (why would you? Request aid on the grounds of lost income), this is not about saving the house (sell it if you can't keep it, go live with relatives if there is no value left in the house).

This is CASH much needed for basic needs. And yes, when you live on food stamps because you had no income for a while, $500 make a difference. Ask a homeless guy next time you see one, he'll tell you.

As well, if the house is lost, where do you think the kid will keep his toys? Better sell them now

Steve I really think the dad took an online class paid for by the kool-aid stand money on "how to ####### out your child to the media for your own personal gain"

bwahahhahahah

no, Amby...it's about sentimentality. Get it straight! *stern look & finger point*
