I could add an average but the general processing time for that form is highly dependent on the local office. Thoughts?

Hi Captain Ewok,

That is a great point and honestly, I did not factor that into my original request.  However, after some thought, my rational for having the I-485 current processing time posted is just that, it is an estimate of the processing time based off of VJer timelines.  This estimate takes into account both local offices as well as NBC.  Although not entirely accurate, it will provide a ball park estimate of what is actually happening throughout the country based on people's timelines.  This way, at least people might be able to gauge a little better estimate of actual processing time.  Noting of course, some will be faster and some will be slower, depending on visa types, but all approved applications will follow a bell curve.  Too bad you couldn't separate out different visa types and I-485 processing times as this would provide even more accurate times.

Taking everything into consideration, people would need to understand that this is just an estimate based off other VJer timelines and not to get their pants on fire if their AOS is past the estimate date.  I'd like to know what others think, but I think displaying the estimate would be useful to some of us who understand that the date is just an estimate.

I think it's a great idea, but I think it would need all sorts of disclaimers surrounding the fact that it is an estimate based on VJ timelines only.  Having just gone through the ROC process, our monthly group found out that our monthly log sheet was FAR more accurate than VJ timelines, since only half of our group actually filled OUT a timeline.

Any ideas on how we can get that type of involvement on timelines?  Can we improve the way folks enter information?

Getting that type of involvement is going to be extremely difficult and is going to be the million dollar question.  Just by looking at the K1 processing times from Igor's list the numbers never go above 85%.  A lot of people set up an account, enter some incomplete information, get a few questions answered, and then drop off never to be heard from again, thus corrupting the data.  Besides peer pressure to complete timelines and kicking inactive members getting people to complete timelines is going to be difficult.  Not even sure how to approach that one.  Is there some type of logic that could be developed to inactivate members that haven't been active for a set period of time say like after a few months?  That will deal with some of the corrupt data.  For the other part, active members will have to "encourage" members to fill out their timelines to make it more active.  Maybe you have a pop-up message that says, "Is your timeline accurate?  Please update your timeline so all members can benefit from accurate processing times."  Or something to that effect.  Kind of like a do not pass go until your timeline is filled out.  LOL

Just a few thoughts.

Just a few thoughts.

I would love it if the major forums (like the I-130, NVC or ROC monthly forums) would require a timeline before people could post more than, say, 5 posts.  But that might seem draconian to some, and maybe people access VJ before starting any processes.  I honestly think some people are just super private - it IS a stressful journey!

I don't think LJ's "a few months" would work, since so many processes are taking over a year these days.

I know Saylin and DWheels 76 often exhort people to fill out their timelines.

Another thought - I have always accessed VJ from my laptop or desktop.  Is it hard to do from people's phones?  If so, that might be a place to start.

Thanks for all the input.  Timelines and monthly forums ARE so very helpful!

Hi Sukie, I agree.  I don't think my few months comment would be appropriate because it is taking so long for approval these days.  I was just thinking about the large cohort of people that set up an account are active for a few weeks and then drop out to never be heard of again.  That's where some of the data gets corrupted.

I really like your comment about requiring a timeline before people could post more.  Adding to that maybe they have to verify their timelines are accurate after x amount of time or posts as well.  Or the possibility of including a check box or something to have our timeline included in the stats and if it isn't checked then those timelines would not be included.

I'm with you.  I only access VJ from my computer as it is not iPhone/iPad friendly.

Brainstorming is good.  Lots of good ideas for Captain Ewok and the other administrators to look into.  I'm by no means a programmer and don't know if these things are possible, but I can definitely come up with ideas to challenge them.  Sorry Captain Ewok :D

I don't think forcing actions to post would result in overall improved usage. In my development experience, you always catch more flies with honey than vinegar (well, when users had a choice to use my software or not....ty corporations & government?).

I do think a nag screen prior to post #1 to fill in your timeline so that you can get better assistance would be helpful. And another one (nag screen or banner) once every x months...kind of like how the message to write an embassy review shows up once you've updated your timeline with an interview date. Or use maybe emails reminders to update every so often?

Well I would say this is a bug, plus I really need some assistance from VJ.  Multiple emails not working:

I have been trying to close my VJ account.  I can't find any place to do it, and although I have emailed tech support repeatedly, all I keep getting is ticket opened, ticket closed, with no substantive information on how to close, or that it has been closed, and... well clearly, my account is still open.

And there is no phone number to call any person to get this addressed.  And I can't get into the "ticket" to see what they've written and to "add a comment" as is supposed to be possible.

HELP!!!!

I am sorry you are still waiting; I have brought this case to the attention of our Admin, Captain Ewok.
I don't have the ability to close accounts, but if you want/ don't hear from Captain Ewok for another while, I can "ban permanently" your account, which should have the same effect.
