Land of milk and honey? I guess I don't hang out with the right gang! everybody I know seems to struggle, losing their houses, their jobs, filing for bankruptcy etc... most of my friends moved back to Canada. I don't know maybe I've lost faith about the american dream a bit lately.

I just bought a brand new home! I've NEVER had faith in the american dream, my faith has always been in Christ. Things will get better for you :energy:

I know a lot of people who have moved here. Those who have moved here seeking true love are quite happy and doing well. Those who moved here because it is "better" than somewhere else, are the people who will be satisfied nowhere....

Glad ya liked it.

To the OP: I don't know where you're from in Canada or what your line of work is. But keep in mind the recession is global and has hit hard there too. The economy in Ontario is tottering. For the first time ever, Ontario is now officially a 'have not' province. Southern Ontario manufacturing jobs are getting wiped out. The automotive industry in Oshawa and Windsor is an integral part of the same companies hit here in the US - GM, Chrysler, to a lesser extent Ford. Their assembly lines are being shut down, dealerships are being closed. Out west in the oil patch, Ft. McMurray was a boom town when oil was $140 per barrel. It's much quieter now.

I'm bullish in the long run on the US. The innovation and work ethic in this country will go a long, long way. We've got a tough spell, but there's been worse. Better days are ahead.

one factor i believe is we as a country have removed God out of our society and along with him values, morals, and anything that is good. We as a culture have become so superficial and materialistic we forgot that the most important things in our lives is the one thing money college can't buy. That is family.. Look at the institution of marriage it is being attacked on all sides by all different groups and pressures of our day. Divorce stats are higher than marriage stats its so prevalant divorce is almost normal.

We as a nation used to be the promise land because generations before us did the right things and took the resposability as citizens to ensure we were on the right track. But as time gone by and USA had no serious trials sinc e wwII we became complacent and "spoiled" taking everythjing we have for granted not thinking to pass the values and history of our forefathers before us to our children after us. Soon enough their children thought about "themselves" instead of thinking of the nation that has allowed us to have this great promise land.

We are soo busy trying too hard not to offend anyone that we end up standing for nothing. you will find these nut cases on this site all the time.. You can't say what you believe because it might offend someone. If you do. some nut case will come and flame you for being honest. Because you could "offend" someone. Political correctness is another factor to the destruction of this promise land....

This country isn't a country of people anymore it's a country of self interest groups whose only interests are themselves... The american people are too busy putting their collective head up their butts to see what is happening around them till now people are starting to wake up from their empathy and rising up notice the tea parties that is one sign of anger from the people..

Hopefully there will be more. I hope one day we can kick out all the political correct people to cuba let them rot that country inside out and i pray this country will be the promise land yet again

The pessimistic part of me says the internet, the "hollywood wacko left", and the media will be the downfall of this still great nation. Though I don't like who or what was elected this past Nov. I know that in just two years we can get rid of one part and in 4 years the other will be gone. Now, not to get political as I usually am not, I have felt the heat of this recession pretty badly.

I am in the marine buisiness as I work on sportfishing boats. Of course the tourism industry and the boating industry has been hit pretty hard, though you never hear it mentioned. Now the optimistic side of me sees fuel not as expensive as last year so the private opps I know of will spend more time on the water this year. The charters are hurting but with the losses they took last year they can't cut costs this year so many don't want to book trips---especially with the media crying how bad it is. IMO if you want a job you can get one, you may have to do something you don't want to for a temporary period of time but jobs are out there.

Took a boat around from annapolis to Ocean City MD today and the chesapeake was loaded with blow (sail) boats and the delaware was loaded with powerboats fishing, just like normal on this time of the year. I have been busy cleaning boats and doing a few deliveries while waiting for my next fishing gig. Had two good seasonal rides for the last several years but they were both dealer demo programs so needless to say they were cut back due to lack of boat sales. But boats get older and people will want new ones before you know it, as with cars and trucks. Just needs to take a little readjustment period before people realize that only 15 years ago you needed the same "locked in stone" kind of job with documents to prove it to buy a car, boat, or house. No different now. We will get through, just ignore the idiots in the media who are all gloom and doom. It trully isn't that bad. The marina parking lot by me is still packed with full size SUV's and pickups as always. No changes here.

The USA is still the land of milk and honey. Some of the problems are from people getting a bad loan or a where the house is so expensive. People themselves as well as the Government are not putting priorities in the proper places. There are those in congress and in the current administration that are trying to turn the USA into a socialist state. This is a great country, but I want to make it an even better country.

I don't buy into your arguements. Most people do have health care, and even those without it are still able to get treatment. At least we're not left to die waiting in lines for care like in other socialist countries. The financial problems are not as you describe due to "greedy corporations". The problems are all due to GREEDY CITIZENS (and illegal immigrants) who think they're entitled to buy homes they cannot afford. Giving those ill fated loans was the bright idea of our ever socialist growing government. The banks and Wall Street where the ones left holding the bag when it all came crashing down.

Eventually - the people will feel the same type of pain we went through in the Jimmy Carter years - and a new generation will learn that socialism just doesn't work - and that people need to live within their means. As long as the first and second ammendments stay in place - there is always hope for the USA.

I wrote this last week when I came back from the states:

"PS. Every time I visit(since last October) I feel that the country is getting worse. (Economic situation). I was in NYC, and there was a whole block of empty stores because business closed down in Madison Ave, and you can see this in many other streets.(I seriously do not want to see the NYC of the 80 again) Last time I was in Philly, there were houses for sale everywhere. I would talk to people, and they would say: Oh my father had to close the business down (Or someone the knew).

Jobless claims continue to raise. This together with businesses having to close down, and people having less income, makes the situation really difficult. I think the first phase of the recession was at very high level (Investment banks etc etc) so people did not really feel it that much other than hearing about it in the news. (obviously people that lost their job felt it). So I think there is going to be a second phase, where all the population will really feel the impact of this financial meltdown.(I hope all the stimulus packages etc etc will not make this happen. But there are trillions and trillions of dollars that do not exist anymore. That never existed. If the goverment continues to print money, the inflation in the next years will sky rocket, with the dollar losing more value and interest rate going up (The Perfect storm)

So, I feel afraid sometimes to come and live here. In times like this is more important to have a social safety net (like in europe) than trying to be adventurous. I lost my job in germany, but the unemployment insurance pays me good. My health insurance is paid for. And also my pension contributions are paid for. I am not much of a socialist, but if it wasn't because of this socialistic approach, i would be in deep s*^*7 now.

Although my idea is that if I come here, I do not just want to look for a job, but I want to create my job, creating also jobs for others: The american dream,. I think if we are coming to live here, we have to believe in that."

As someone else said, the point is: Why do you move to the states?

1-Love.

2-Because it is better.

If it is love, one land equals the other (Just talking about Canada, Western europe ...etc). You may have to work harder in one place, but in the end you will be able to live ok.

If you are the type of person running away thinking that the other side is better, then you will always thing the same. No matter where you go.

There is one italian actor called Toto. He made a movie called Uomini o Caporali (Regular Men or Chiefs kind of things) . In this movie he says that there are basically two types of people:

Regular men and The chiefs.

The chief basically make the life of regular men hard. In a way this is true and changing a country will not make you a chief or a regular man either.

In the end, if one decides to marry a person from another country, he or she is already looking for something different. Otherwise one could have just found a girl or a boy from his or her hometown. if you already did this, what you have next is an open see.In this open see Either you become a Cristoforo Colombo, or a nobody. The important thing is to be happy with either or.
