WASHINGTON - More than two months after Barack Obama placed his hand on the Bible and was sworn in as president of the United States, 11 per cent of Americans still think he is a Muslim, a poll suggested on Thursday.

White evangelical Protestants and Republicans were the most likely to say Obama — who has an Arabic middle name — was Muslim in response to the poll question: "Do you happen to know what Barack Obama's religion is?"

Nearly one in five white evangelical Protestants and 17 per cent of the Republicans who took part in the telephone poll of 1,308 adults, which was conducted by Pew Research from March 9-12, said they thought Obama was Muslim.

Fewer than half in each group — 38 per cent of white evangelicals and 46 per cent of Republicans — correctly identified him as Christian.

I can meet you partway on that--by giving you some highlights from personally-heard (when he visited our church in July 2008) testimony of an ex-Muslim from rural Nalgonda District (in Telengana region of AP--basically area of AP which pre-Partition was part of Nizamate of Hyderabad) Sheikh Joseph. It is extremely dangerous for a Muslim in a Muslim-majority area, or even such an area as Telengana (not majority, but between 20 and 40%), to leave Islam. Né Sheikh Yousuf, he became a Christian at age 25--and had to actually flee his home for the neighbouring district of Warangal (still in Telengana), sleeping on a rail-platform; his parents had denounced him, and were willing to give assent to neighbours who wanted to bump him off. He also suffered delays in his attempt to get a passport in Hyderabad City when the issuing official, a Muslim, refused to hand over the document and called him "apostate" along with some colourful words--resolved however, when Joseph threatened to get shyster-douchebag Rajya Sabha MP Jethmalani (the same one who handled appeals flamboyantly for Indira Gandhi murderers) to file lawsuit on his behalf.

Accurate enough; Joseph actually stated that had he been born in coastal AP or Rayalseema (inland Southwest AP), he would have been safe--unfortunately he happens to be from Telengana area.
