To all of you just starting out and wondering, if all of this will ever end, the answer is yes. This weekend we received my stepson's 10 year green card. Now my journey that began in May of 2003 is now complete.

So, hang in there. There is light at the end of the tunnel. This really frustrating journey does end. Now my wife and son are settling in for a long time of life. The piles of paperwork, hundreds of dollars in fees, the seemingly endless trips to the USCIS offices is at an end. Whew!

I had some problems along the way, made a few errors, but ultimately I was successful. I am very happy with my wife and son. We have a pretty good life together and struggle along like all families.

Best of luck to all of you. Be patient and don't get discouraged. You will survive all of this and end up with a happy new life.

Bye to all,

John

Congratulations! Your son started his visa journey the same time we did - May 2003 - and I just got my 10 year card last month. It is a long journey, I'm glad it is done for you and your family as well.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

One option that you could have explored for step son, and if step son is younger than 18, would have been adoption, and immediate citizenship, vs removal of conditions.

Next step is naturalization and citizenship.

Only 10 year green card? After 6 years of waiting?

What happens after those 10 years when the green card expires?

It can be renewed by filing an I-90, and paying a fee. NOTE: LPR status never expires, just the card expires.

Other option is to file an N-400 for citizenship.

So if his wife divorced him now, he wouldn't risk being deported anymore?

CONGRATULATIONS, 1HappyGuy !

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

Ten years is a long time to have a reminder pasted to the refrigerator door. If your stepson is under 18, can get USC for just the biometrics fee if your wife applies under the marriage provision.

With USC, then it's finally over and you don't have to worry about losing that green card that can cost $$$$$, nor renew it. Plus if your stepson has grandparents he would like to see, have to try to maintain a current valid foreign passport that may not be easy.

Your are not the only one that had that long stressful trial with the USCIS, after our I-751 difficulties, my wife applied at the earliest possible date, has her US Passport, and feels a part of this country now. Unfortunately, my stepdaughter was born a couple of months too late so has to wait the full five years as she turned 18 before we could apply. But would have been under 18 if the USCIS didn't take their sweet time.
