Pick your antivirus!

Like rnmcm, I use my brain, but as people can now put viruses in to jpeg files, silent installs when you look through a site that has been hacked and more, they can literally just appear on your system. As I am a so-called "power user", I need something that has a light footprint yet is powerful. So I use NOD32 AV, not their security suite. This protects me against viruses and trojans and a lot of spyware. I use spybot search and destroy once a month to clear any unwanted spyware and I use ccleaner once a week to clear my temporary files, often a hiding place for silent trojans.

...so far it hasnt given me any problem unlike when i was using kaspersky lab

It has been stated by govt sites that AVG is by far the best protection you can get.

Government agencies use this on their systems, and due to the fact that so many other businesses use it at a cost...it has been made readily free to the public in a toned down version that works equally as well as pre installed virus programs such as Norton, and McAfee. Those who know computers, design, and build systems, and sites speak very highly of AVG as well. Due to friends who recommended it who do this, i have installd on my computer, and it works flawlessly, and in additon they also advise the use of Mozilla (FireFox) as yor browser, and use Internet Explorer only if and when what you are accessing is not accessible using Mozilla. I was shown that Mozilla incorporates it own antiVirus, and AntiSpy programs. As Explorer was devised by Micro Soft, it opens up back doors via other means when combined with McAfee and Norton.

I once had to erase and have these folks clear my drives, and ever since had a flawless system, and stand by it readily. Not to say anything is hack free, or Virus Free, but if people who create programs stand by it....then it works for me. Just a thought, and my opinion.

Safe surfing folks, and as many of these hacks, Viruses, and Spy Wares come from foreign countries then we as a group who spend a great deal of time chatting with our loved ones via sites ridden with them..then we are at a higher risk then most.

Norton is sooo heavy. Gave up on my year free trial.

I use Spybot Search & Destroy. Norton and AVG were too resource heavy for me, but the last time I used Norton was years ago. Don't like McAfee and the rest I've never tried.

I thought Spybot was only for spyware, not antivirus. Make sure you are protected against both!

Spybot is only against spyware as it's name implies. Firefox or Opera as a browser have built-in warning systems against known virus hosting sites, it makes you aware before the threat presents itself.

Kaspersky. I had to get it to clean up a problem that snuck past AVG. It is very light on memory usage and doesn't let anything get by. You can set it to your own personal level of paranoia. The only downside I think is that it takes a while to train it.

Spybot actually protects against a whole host of things, including trojans and viruses. It isn't as thorough against trojans and viruses as dedicated applications, but that's why she justified the tradeoff between performance and protection. As long as you use your head, and hide behind N/PAT, you'll usually be just fine. People who use dedicated anti-virus applications and browse and download carelessly are more at risk of having their computers infected than people who apply a healthy dose of common sense when venturing onto the Internet.
