Do Fairy Tales and Romantic Movies Skew Marriage Expectations

I've always had this theory that growing up with fairy tales and romantic movies skews the realistic perception of a perfect marriage.

I mean, the prince proposes to the princess, they live happily ever after....and you never hear about the disagreements and late night dicussions

they had in order to "live happily ever after".

I met Milagros (Translation Miracle) on 07/07/07. I'm living my Fairytale. I think marriage is what you make of it and if you are more likely to repeat what you've seen from your parents then you are of something from Disney!

Yes, they do!

A marriage, like any relationship takes work, compromise and understanding.

It's sad that people get married and when the other(or both) dont live up to some unrealistic expectation they divorce.

Timeline: 13 month long journey from filing to visa in hand

If you were lucky and got an approval and reunion with your loved one rather quickly; Please refrain from telling people who waited 6+ months just to get out of a service center to "chill out" or to "stop whining" It's insensitive, and unecessary. Once you walk a mile in their shoes you will understand and be heard.

Thanks!

It only skews peoples' ideas of marriage if they believe everything they read/see/etc.

Interesting perspective.

We're usually introduced to fairy tales at a young impressionable age (like being introduced to religion).

At this age, we have no reason not to believe what we're read or told (like religion).

Although we gain insight into the world as we become more mature, is it really unthinkable that some remnants

of those early teachings don't stay with us?

OH you have nailed it, yes I too grew up with the romantic fairy tales, where no one has gas, or uses the bathroom. I mean has any one seen prince charming using the bathroom and stinking it up. Real life is just a wee bit different.

EXACTLY!! You may not have the white horse or a prince in armor BUT it is what you make of it. I have mine and even in fairytales they experience issues and problems..working them out together as a team and having wonderful communication, laughing, being honest...OH the list is long. I am happy to say I finally kiss the right toad!

This may not answer your question, but along the the lines of "happily ever after in fairy tales," you should read the comic book series "Fables." It's an entirely new and different look at fairly tales (and the characters in them), some of which is quite shocking to those who've only seen the Disney versions.

Marriage is more like the movie War of the Roses. Flying crockery and curses and swinging away at each other with meat cleavers. ;)
