We're on the north side of Houston, not in a mandatory evacuation area, so we're staying put. It's my first experience of hurricane season and part of me is scared and the other part is hoping it could just be fun to "camp out at home" for a few days! Anyone else in Houston? Anyone in the mandatory evacuation area? Just curious...

Stay safe, all!

I'm in Houston too - the Northwest side up near Cypress. I'm 100 miles from the coast and they're still predicting some pretty incredible wind/rain for us.. My fiance arrives in two weeks; hopefully there is something left to see when he gets here. Stay safe and don't forget to fill your bathtub with water before this thing gets in and takes the power out.

My house in southwest Houston is about 50 miles from Galveston island and the Gulf as the crow flies. I spent the first half of the day putting plywood on all the windows and putting loose objects in the garage. So far the day has been a real snoozer. I just got back from riding my bicycle around the neighborhood and still waiting for the hype all the news media is talking about to hit. I'm not really worried about the storm itself, but dread the power outage that is sure to come in the middle of the night as the hurricane passes over. No air conditioning, no TV, no internet, and no lights in a boarded up house. That sux. I got plenty of beer on ice though so I'll survive. I'll miss the air conditioning the most though.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

Just about to move my computer away from the windows. I live in an apartment complex and the first thing they did was send around a note saying - you are responsible and will pay for any damage you do to the structure by putting up plywood.

Oh how nice that they are concerned with our safety. Hope all Galveston residents had the opportunity to leave. I can't believe the people who are still hanging out down there. It's getting a bit windy and dark on this end. No rain yet though.

:bumped to keep this on top of all political whining (jeez things haven't changed on VJ  )

only 60% of inhabitants of Galveston have left  they DO know they can't count on outside assistance for the time being aye

The Crossroads area will be less stormy than first predicted, gusts up to 60mph ... peanuts compared with the Houston metro area

Hang in tight there!!!!

I'm in North Houston by the IAH, no air traffic today anymore, pretty windy but nothing else. Only 2 houses in the neighborhood are boarded up, don't think it's needed, hope will be ok. Also dread power outage, I was soooo smart to stock up on food, that my freezer and fridge are full, I wonder what it will look like if we'll have no power for extended period of time.

As long as not longer than 4-6 hours without power and no water outage, I think it'll be ok.

They say last one this big hit Houson in 1983 I think. The biggest ever ruined Galveston in 1900.

I am new here, so not sure. Still have power and internet. Will see what next few hours will bring. But already about 750,000 people are without power south of Houston. Wind howls pretty bad time to time, and rain.

The saying goes "Everything's bigger in Texas" but this is way over the top

We're fine here in the Victoria area on the extreme western fringe, some gusts but no rain... my brother in law in Palacios is also fine, the bay was extremely swollen though

But the real damage has been done further east

Massive flooding in Galveston and Houston and apx 3 million people w/o power... anxiously awaiting daylight to find out the scale of damage, but be sure this is going to be massive

I hope all VJ'ers in the area are safe 'n sound

I stayed up till the wee hours of the morning watching the coverage.

I hope that the people who decided not to heed the warnings to evacuate are okay.... :(

The only funny thing was that I was flipping back and fourth between Fox News and CNN and on Fox News, Geraldo Rivera was right there in Galveston, right on the beach it seemed and he was getting the ####### kicked out of him, wind, debris....man it was brutal. I just kept yelling at the TV, "PUT YOUR HOOD ON!!!" "OMG DUCK, GET OUT OF THE WAY GERALDO!!!" LOL

It sucks they couldn't find a more secure place to broadcast from like one of the CNN crews..they were in a 4 level parking garage and seemed pretty safe and secure...although behind them was chaos.

Thinking of everyone down there!!!
