Comcast Sets Threshold for 'Excessive' Internet Use (250 gigs/month)

Comcast Corp., the largest U.S. cable operator, said subscribers whose use of the Internet exceeds 250 gigabytes of data a month may get a warning call and could lose their service.

Customers who breach the threshold -- enough to send 50 million e-mails or 125 standard-definition movies -- may be asked to reduce their use, the Philadelphia-based company said today in a Web posting. Those whose "excessive use'' continues may be cut off for a year, Comcast said.

That's like a car lessor telling the lessee that the lessee is only allowed to drive 1,000,000 miles a month.

Makes me wonder about the accounts that triggered that limit - there have to be some users out there going over that amount for Comcast to have set that as their limit, otherwise, why bother?

That reminds me when I was back home a few years ago before DSL was widley available... I got an email from BT telling me I was overusing their "unlimited" dial up by staying connected too long. I kept it on all night when I downloaded thing you know, updates for windows, virus definations... etc. I suppose "unlimited" doesn't mean "unlimited" to some companies! They ended up cutting me off as I used the internet too much even though it was "unlimited"... lol I never used them again for really anything till stupid DSL was available by then, they where the only choice in town  Now I'm stuck with Comcast which I feel almost certian they'll be adding in some hidden caps as well same as the tossers BT did. Although I have to admit I think I'd struggle quite a bit to pull in 250GB a month! Unless someone got into my WLAN and fired up a few torrent sites!

If the 250gb is all downloads, that would be like buying a new harddrive every month :P

This limit is really about trying to control media distribution. Comcast does not want their cable business to have to compete with video content providers online.

Beyond that...it's a new way to fight un-capped cable modems. There are hacked cable modems capable of downloading at 25mb/sec to 30mb/sec

using the same inexpensive service you pay them for today. But if they go after the un-capped modem users directly, they fear everyone discovering that there's more bandwidth available, and that they're actually just squeezing everyone's connection via software, except the people who are spending insane amounts of money for ADSL and the likes.
