I've actually been to a baby shower for a baby that was carried by a surrogate. The "mother-to-be" got all the attention and gifts and the surrogate stood around almost completely ignored like some kind of breeding cow. Kind of creepy.

yeah creepy.. if we ever did the surrogacy thing I wouldn't do that.. I would be ever so grateful to the woman for doing that for us...

Nope. Complications = reason #1 and I have a problem with doing so much to have a baby when there's so many children in this world who need good homes. Why not just adopt? You're adopting the egg anyways.

well, I think people do it because they usually fertilize the egg with the husband's sperm.. so the baby will at least be somewhat related to them..

I would do it if someone I know needed them but I don't really need the money so I don't see myself donating any eggs anytime soon

They wouldn't let you here in the US anyway. Just like they don't want organs or blood. Basically all of Europe is OUT to make any kind of donation. (correct me if I'm wrong)

I would never think of donating my eggs because I can't bear the thought of knowing that they will eventually become babies, and that I will never meet them. And I agree if couples can't seem to conceive adoption is a wonderful option out there.

Is the price really worth it though? Not for me, so I wouldn't donate. One of those questions where there's no right answer.

Haha, my husband said if we ever need to adopt, we have to go to a country that's good at soccer ;)

A friend of mine had bought one of these eggs, paid $7500 for it, and is happy as heck, cause she couldn't have a baby without it.

But on a side note, they don't just take any person as a donor, they have some requirements, and "preferences." If you are not college educated, the price you'll get gets sliced in half, tall blonds with nordic ancestry get more $$, short overweight ladies are usually not wanted for egg donors. And if you are over 27 they don't want your eggs, they are too old and wont harvest in the mother or surrogate as well as say an 18-23yr old eggs will.

Its basically a checklist, depending on what you check off you are, determines how much they'll offer you for your eggs. The procedure is not as drastic as a full surgery as some here have stated. You do have to take hormone inducing pills for like 2-3 months before.

Kinda creepy to know you will have children but they are not really yours and you might never see them.

I think the laws vary by state, but from what my friend said, in the contract with the egg donor, she had "rights" to the baby. I'm not sure on the details of what they were. Its not like she could come and get the baby from their home, but she could request through a lawyer to see the baby at some point, or perhaps some type of very limited visitation.

I wouldn't fault anyone for doing it but I don't think I could... I'm just not comfortable with the thought there'd be my baby out there and I couldn't raise them

If I had a relative, in my immediate family, that could not conceive on their own, I would consider it. But not for $$.
